Still nobody knows just yet what happened. John had bypass surgery about 5 years ago, had his gall bladded removed about 3 years ago, and had to take multiple shots of insulin every day to keep his out-of-control sugar numbers down.

Wow. I am shocked. Just found out and I don't know what to say. John was the guy who hired me for my first job in traffic and one of the nicest people I have ever known. He will be missed.

If you'd like to send condolences in the meantime, email to dallasops@traffic.com. We'll make sure the family and co-workers get them. Thanks to all for your kindness.

Ironic you bring up my *situation* as I was talking with Andy Waldrop about that this morning when I got the news. I was reminded of the last time I saw John. It was at my Dad's funeral. He was as undone as any of my immediate family members. Me, Holly, Tiffany and Joey were so touched. Dad was very fond of John, and Jay Walker. They had so much fun doing the morning show at KSNN.
Anybody know of Jay's whereabouts? * I am speaking of the Jay Walker that worked at KSNN, KEGL, and <I think> WLS.

Very, very sad news indeed. I'm no expert, but it sounds to me like he might have suffered a heat stroke. Y'all take it easy if you're working outdoors! Heat stroke is nothing to take lightly. You need to hydrate frequently if you are working in the heat. My daughter had to work 9 1/2 hours in 120 degree heat on the outdoor set of a TV show. They had her, the cast, the crew, and all of the cast parents drink a bottled water every 20 minutes. Nobody went to the bathroom - you sweated it all off. One crew member forgot to drink and had to be airlifted to the hospital. One of the extras collapsed but didn't have to go to the hospital - but they were done for the day, too weak to stand. If that can happen to a healthy teenager - it can sure happen to someone older.

This is really shocking news...does anyone know what happenned???
John and I talked or exchanged emails about every 6mos. The last time i spoke to him we talked about our Diabetes and how important it is to stay on top of it. I don't know what happened to John but for those of you with Diabetes please keep it in check. It's a killer if you don't. My prayers and condolences to the McCarty family. RIP John we'll miss you!

I've never written message one on these boards until today... and it is to simply say this:
John McCarty was a hell of a man... he had talent, he had class, and he was more than just a great boss... he was a good friend. John would go to bat for his employees all day long, he would practically invent a position if he knew it would help out a fellow jock who needed the work, and he was a REAL human being... something that there is not nearly enough of in this business today! John truly loved his family, but he saw a lot of us as being in his extended family, and he extended that love to us all.
I can't even begin to tell you how much I will miss him. I don't think I have had a tear in my eye since I left the Persian Gulf, but my eyes are full of them today... John, go in peace, and know that you have made many of us better broadcasters - and better people - because of your influence!
Laura and I love you, and miss you dearly!

Being extremely moved by Monte's posting - it inspired me to register so I could first, announce my deepest condolences for the McCarty family but also express how much I will miss John.
I was fascinated when I first met John because I recognized the voice...and I got that twinge of meeting a local celebrity ...he was made for the busioness he very muched reveled in - how fortunate I was to have come to work with him for the past 8 years ...his is a voice we all will miss hearing, he is a friend I will miss seeing...
It was very obvious to witness the respect, admiration and appreciation shown to him by those that worked with him on a daily basis.
John was a close comrade of mine in the office and we shared many laughs and chuckles at the day to day of the goings on at the office. John was a guy you wanted to be associated with becuase you knew he was a man of charachter, values, morals and humor...his latest gimmick was saying an exagerrated "WOW" as many of us in the office have been witness to...
John, you got the last "WOW" my firend...I will miss you and always remember you and the things we shared...my heart goes out to your family and friends you have left behind.
Rest in peace and watch over us.

Stunned, shocked, sad....John was a great guy. From working with John at KEWS to working for him at Traffic.Com, he was always upbeat, positive and a real pro. More than that...he was a friend.
We'll miss him.
