Anybody else heard the promo running on FROGGY promoting H-D .. "high definition" radio???  I couldn't believe it.  This is a locally produced promo (I think) ..kids voice..talking about "FROGGY" and "Northeast PA" in it, so I assume it was done at Entercom.

Now, Entercom has made some dumb moves, so I guess not even knowing that "HD" does NOT mean "high definition" shouldn't surprise me.  But that DID surprise me and had me rolling.

I've heard that HD stands for "hybrid digital"..or that it stands for nothing...I don't claim to know.   But it SURE doesn't mean "high definition" radio.  HELLO  FROGGY and ENTERCOM.....that would be your TV!

Let's think this trough; HD Radio may not stand for Hi Def, indeed iBiquity the company who created the standard for digital broadcasting says HD stands for nothing and is just the brand name, but they chose HD for a reason.  I submit that the reason is the average consumer knows HD as a high quality digital signal.  Not a bad thing to be associated with.  I'm not so sure if I were putting a promo together for a HD channel that I wouldn't be tempted to drive home that connection by calling it Hi Def.  Maybe someone at Froggy thought hey how do we get the average listener to care about our HD channel?  Then they decided to extend the loigic of naming the technology HD and just flat out say Hi Def to make that connection in a listener's mind.  Accurate no but hey it is advertising.

Probably right.

Regardless, if I had a HD radio I'd put it on the shelf right next to my quadrophonic sound system and my AM stereo radio. My prediction fwiw.
