But..Traditional Oldies has VERY limited appeal.It has been tried, a few times in several markets, with good and bad sales people and it still doesn't make money. I listened to the internet stream of Oldies, and this is MUCH Older than the format sounded when it was getting big ratings. The 50's played make the station sound even older. Successful Oldies stations were centered on the hit songs from the Mid-Late 60's.."the Beatles and beyond".
Look for a long tough and expensive road..even on the am, but if you're going to do it anyway, best of luck.

Oldies radio is an art. When done right the appeal goes way beyond the upper money demographics. At HyLitRadio our sophisticated statistical gathering techniques calculate, among other things, the point of origin of the local area network locations that tune in. In our top 100 are 20 of the major colleges in the Delaware Valley and surrounding areas, comprising a surprising tune in ratio to our total demographics. Well said Sam, thanks!  Theres a lot of good music out there!  Bring on a variety of the 50'a 60's 70's and they'll listen for the variety and difference.   Keep on rockin'! (And I worked with you at the old WEEZ Chester as a part time engineer WAY back!)

I wish you well with your station!

I have done a similar thing, only with classic country since 2005. The station is local
on 1610 AM and streams via Live365.com. The audience is not big; the total listening
hours are not gigantic; but the station reaches its niche nicely and the core audience loves it.

Also, because there's little overhead and no debt service, it doesn't take a lot of income to
keep going. We have a few advertisers, and a few donors who contribute. We never ask for
money on the air, however.

I too wish you well with your station!

    Alan gets it! Our overhead is much lower than the big boys, beginning at the electric box; our total electric bill with three stations running and all the equipment to support them is around $50 and that is with all the taxes tacked on California can dream up! Most part 15 AM stations are true Ma & Pa operations often run out of the home eliminating another expense: Costly office rent!

   We run an Oldies format on the weekends and have no trouble attacking a younger demo, the trick is to be entertaining with lots of engaging special events like hosting Sox Hops and High School dances. If you involve the local youth, they will not only listen but get involved in helping make your station a success. You might also be surprised just how often one of those younger folks have family that happens to own one of those Ma & Pa business that local radio depends on for revenue.

Thanks for your comments Steve, we'll tune you in and get you on our page also.  I bought a couple new computers and monitor for the production and automation and have a 3rd old computer to do the encoding (which we got a sweet deal on for number of listeners).  With this arrangement, we can use outboard processing.  The studio was just finished today, its being tuned up and we'll be using about 85-90% vinyl(almost 30000 45's available).   More to come

Congratulations on getting a Part 15 on the Air!
I used to do Oldies In the Beginning. But I stopped
playing Oldies and Dedicated Wednesday to be the oldies day.
In my Opinion Wednesday Has more Listeners than the Rest of
The Week. But that is slowly Changing as my Programming Changes on
Those Other Days.
