Another explanation for the strength of the Cuban station in NYC is the over water salt path from Cuba to NYC.  That really enhances the signal.  When I was a kid, I spent summers on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina back in the mid 60's.  The most popular station on the beach was the "Big Ape" the mighty 690 out of Jacksonville Florida.

And when I was 19 I did summer relief, including overnights and remotes, at WMID Atlantic City.  I recall broadcasting three nights a week from a restaurant in Wildwood, 40 miles distant from WMID's site - at the time the Jersey Giant's graveyard frequency (1340) limited night power to 250 watts.  Yet I listened off-air to a perfectly listenable signal, getting my cues from a transistor radio.  And this was with co-channel WHAT Philly only 70 miles distant to the west!

General consensus of most BCB DX'ers in and around Miami is that this Cuban is about a 50 KW station, most DX'ers I have contacted or have read think this whole thing is a bunch of political malarkey.

HD radio? 250.00??!! My 20 year old boombox sounds and receives better than that, you know the one with the paint drips on it and clothes hanger antenna that the painters threw into the dumpster?

And Tom, well why are you whining about your analog service getting interference from a Cuban? Just tell those folks to get a HD radio, as the Cuban interference is to the ANALOG service only, not the HD !!   Grin  Grin  Grin  Grin

Side note, WQXI Atlanta on 790 has trouble with the cuban on there as well as WWNC 570 Asheville, NC with Radio Reloj. When conditions are auroral that's when the problem is worst. I rarely hear the Cuban on 710 very well in South Carolina.
