Well, this is hard (gulp).......but I completely agree with.......(oh god...do I have to do this?)........AQH. There....I said it.

Oldies as a format is pretty much a wasted enterprise. I know for a fact that in the final days of KBSG, they were trying to go a little more Rhythmic and more 70's (than 60's). And it was starting to work, but those changes were just in the last 6 months or so and it was too little, too late. They were just starting to get their groove on.

As for KMCQ, this is just simply another ruse to deflect what's really going on. Yeah, they might have a closet in downtown Covington with a computer and a Satellite downlink, but don't think for a minute that these guys are radio operators. They're not. It's an investment bank that has come to town, stagecoach and carpet bags and all. They'll get this puppy on the air, and sell it to a broadcasting group, you watch.

It's possible that a a sale could be delayed in the hope for the Cougar Mountain attempt and the KAFE switch to 104.1, so this may not be consumated for quite some time.

KMCQ moving to Cougar Mountain is simply not going to happen...

The Canadians rule the 104.1 spot critical for KAFE to make room for that move

Remember...  when 'easy listening' was dying out so were the listeners... the 'oldies' format appeals to 'baby-boomers' who are a much larger group and living longer with more money than their grandparents.

Ahhh...fingar...you shouldn't make assumptions, my friend. Nowhere in my post did I say Oldies was dying the SAME WAY B/EZ did.

It doesn't matter if there are more boomers living longer with more money. Re-read my takeaway from the original post:

It's not that upper demos don't have money or don't buy things - it's that those purchase decisions are NOT AS INFLUENCED BY ADVERTISING as they are in younger demos.

AHQ said "hey, it's the same crap KBSG played."

First of all, nobody said you have to listen to the as you say "same crap".   There are enough stations for you to listen to whatever you want.   Can't those of us who still enjoy earlier rock have a place to turn to?   I don't care for KIXI, KJR, KZOK, KWRM, etc. or the talk and sports stations.

I agree with your sentiment.   My point is that there are some people that are about burst their carotid artery in glee over this station and they're going to be disappointed in what they hear.  I was fine with what KBSG played in their heyday, it was good stuff.   It's the people who want oldeis to go four cuts deep on a Lou Christie or Bruce Channel album that are going to be sorely disappointed.

As for the dj's on the new station, my guess is that it will be satellite fed.

And judging by all the "get KIXI off the bird" posts in other threads, that will go over as well as the toll on the Tacoma Narrows Bridge.

I know this might come over as a surprise, but I know I come over as a bonafide jerk on this board.  Partly intentional, but it's nothing what I'm like in person.

The e-mails I get from RI about password requests, when I don't make such requests, amuse me.  Occasionally when I'm bored, I'll cross-reference the IP addresses that come with the e-mail notification with e-mails from people who I suspect.  Just one hit so far, but haven't checked that much lately.

Plus First also happens to own a station or two in Cincinnati, could this be part of a much larger picture?

I've been getting those too...and wondered if it's someone trying to hack or what the deal is??  I have also been checking the IP's ... but curious whether you think the efforts are spider/bots or some human playing with the toys?

The Shadow Lord Of NW Radio.......

« Reply #17 on: August 28, 2008, 06:13:34 PM »

First, B/EZ never truly died. It still lurks on the radio (mostly in Florida and a famous one, KAHM in Arizona) and as close as Comcast Digital Ch. 933.

As long as there are dentist offices, elevators and senior citizens, B/EZ still has a niche. My last trip to the dentist office was a near KSEA flashback because the kind elderly dentist (who almost overdosed me on Novacaine, God bless him) had WAVV Naples, FL playing via computer in his waiting room and his office. Even though I wanted to thank him in spite of the fact I couldn't feel my tongue or lips for three days, it was the most pleasant root canal I've ever had.

Oldies are DEFINATELY not going away. They are just one more format abandoned that will be picked up by public/LPFMs/ Part 15/Internet as time goes by like Nostalgia, B/EZ, Oldies and in another five-ten years, this "Classic Hits" format. If the audiences are TRULY that small (which I doubt), they should do very well.

I think to abandon the older audience is both a godsend and a curse. Because in the short term, you might get younger audiences which begs the questions "Who under 30 listens to the radio?" and with abandoning the older listeners, WHO is going to listen to the radio in 10 years?

And whatever is on this "HD" radio currently is mostly garbage. Public radio has done a FAR better job with it. Because they are not accountable to stockholders, but listeners and their resources are concentrated far more wisely.

You've got that right -- First Broadcasting is not much on operating radio stations -- they just place filler on the air until they can flip the stations to someone else at a healthy profit.  So whatever they put on the station, it ultimately won't matter because it won't last.

The format is a proven winner.  Maybe never a #1 winner, but it can still make money.  I say "hooray".
