Which proves it's still a valuable niche up here.

I'm surprised KMCQ is actually going on the air. Word is they're supposed to be going Cougar Mountain, which I thought was contingent only on them getting KAFE to move down to 104.1, an impossiblity now that a Vancouver station, CHHR has taken up the 104.1 frequency.

At any rate, it will be another south-end signal as KAFE will squish it from Everett north.

I guess now the question is... What is KMCQ's call letters going to switch to, and what the name of the station will be?  And could it be something that could bring some well-known jocks back on the air since it'll be oldies?  Robin and Maynard?  Norm Gregory?  Fastlane?

Clearly KMCQ's owner is more inept at programming choices and talking to the press than they've been with orchestrating the 104.5 move in.

First of all, you DON'T reveal your new station's format a full month before testing begins. Why tip off your future competitors?

As for the choice of oldies: While some of the dinosaurs on this board are applauding the decision (and are again hoping that R&M or Pat Cashman get behind the mic one more time), smart ad buyers are already adding 104.5 to their "undesirable demo" station list.  Oldies in 2008 is what Easy Listening was in 1990 - a dying format. Core demo for Oldies in 1990 was 35-44 - now it's 55-64.

And before the "old people have lots of money to spend" arguments sprout up one more time, a reminder lesson for the class: It's not that upper demos don't have money or don't buy things - it's that those purchase decisions are NOT AS INFLUENCED BY ADVERTISING as they are in younger demos.

This fodder is quite entertaining.

This board drowns in complaints that radio just isn't original anymore, everything is just the same.  Including KBSG, who has been the target of its share of ire over the past several years.  It's the same 12 oldies played, etc.

Yet, some people here are excited about Oldies making some triumphant return here in Seattle, after it's been a whole 16 days since you last heard those songs.  I guarantee you, when you listen for the jocks and/or the jingles, you're going to realize fast that you're going to hear Roy Orbison and Manfred Mann again and realize "hey, it's the same crap KBSG played."

Also keeping in line with the thirst for change and a fresh coat of paint on things here in Seattle; hey let's bring all the old, tired jocks back!  Damn what the listeners said in Arbitron about Robin and Maynard, they remind you of the "good ol' days" at KISW and/or KXRX, and that's what's important.   Pat Cashman?   Oh, he makes a funny inside joke about radio that you find hilarious.  Too bad the three stations who tried his shtick had fewer listeners than that of a Taco Time drive-thru window.

Just keep this thread in mind the next time you clamor for something new in Seattle

AHQ said "hey, it's the same crap KBSG played."

First of all, nobody said you have to listen to the as you say "same crap".   There are enough stations for you to listen to whatever you want.   Can't those of us who still enjoy earlier rock have a place to turn to?   I don't care for KIXI, KJR, KZOK, KWRM, etc. or the talk and sports stations.

As for the dj's on the new station, my guess is that it will be satellite fed.

the answer is: no

who cares, really? you know its gonna be the same crap that'll be abandoned in six months to a year...

same,same,same,same

why bother

Well, apparently someone must care.   KBSG was beat KQMV, KMTT, KPLZ, KNDD, KJAQ, and KJR in the last rating period in all listeners 12+.   Go ahead, tell me how much we need more of the "hot hits", "butt shaking", "jackin off" and other formats that are still on the air for other age demos.

Remember...  when 'easy listening' was dying out so were the listeners... the 'oldies' format appeals to 'baby-boomers' who are a much larger group and living longer with more money than their grandparents.

now, back to the fights...
