Oldies 103.3: Dale and June

Dale is a real pro, and has a long history with Boston radio. In fact not long ago they were pumping the fact it was "Home of Dale Dorman and his 40th year on the radio in Boston!". There was some mention of a large party in the Fall too, I guess not now. He grew more quiet and restrained in the last couple of years. In fact, in the morning they'd do 20 minutes of music and June Knight and you'd be hard pressed at first to realize he was even there.

 That's Dale's quickness and wit he was known for. All that just kind of stopped in the last two years.

Also, remember Dale was out for the count with some undisclosed condition for a chunk of summer in July and August. They juggled Blake, Wright and others in the morning just saying "Dale is out and will be back when he's feeling better, which will be real soon"(which went on for about five weeks or so)

If as you say, he sounded like he was losing interest in playing radio anymore, maybe that was indeed the case.  40-odd years behind the mic is a long time, and if he's also having health problems maybe he thought it best to hang up the old headphones and call it a career.

If he left completely on his own, wouldn't he have been given more of a proper send off though? There was no notice that I know of that Friday was going to be his final show, until his final break.

AllAccess is saying that he'll still be on Saturday mornings. Sounds like a case of someone cutting down on the everyday grind and not going past the expiration date. Not a bad way to exit gracefully.

I didn't hear JJ today but I am sure he was great. He's a true pro. If I was programming Oldies, I'd add more music and less chatter to mornings. WROR has L&W who can't stop yakking. WODS should do the opposite by being more music-focused.

There's no proper send off for semi-retirement. He'll still be on Saturdays.

Boston Radio Watch reports on the cuts by Metro Networks last Friday and the cuts included WODS's Mauzy Stafford so that's why she wasnt there this morning.  Mauzy, however, remains on the WODS website.  She usually does her own Sunday afternoon show (leading into Lost 45's) although she wasn't on yesterday.  I would assume, with her own show, that she was also employed by WODS so, even though Metro cut her, she may still be employed at Oldies.

I didn't realize that you were privy to decision making back then.  Of course if you were privy to those decisions you would know that indeed it was Paul Perry and it was at the end of '98.  Potter had been there about a year.   To my knowledge Perry never drew the ratings Potter did.

I didn't have to be privvy to the decision making.   I was privvy to listening to him...and the fact that he was showing up in our research...and not in a positive light.

If he was showing up in our research...then I assume he was shoing up in CBS' research too.

   ...you would know that indeed it was Paul Perry and it was at the end of '98.  Potter had been there about a year.   

I did say Paul Perry.  However, I knew nothing about the "PD's best friend".

To my knowledge Perry never drew the ratings Potter did.

That's what they tried to do. When Dale was hired in 2003, he promoted that the show was going to be more music-focused (than L&W), and it DID play a lot more music per hour than L&W on WROR.

But, it didn't work (well enough). That demographic in Boston still seems to go for L&W's gags on WROR after all these years.

Here's another wild thought.Could Ed McMann possibly be a candidate for mornings at WODS?He is voicetracking a few stations including B101 in Providence and long ago someone posted that it's a matter of survival along with any other ventures he has.Personally I never considered him anything more than a good set of pipes who played his career cards the right way but he is a known name in Boston.He's not known for bits and most of his talk is music and artist related but it may be the direction the station wants to go.If nothing else it would get him out of Providence but then again B101 would just replace him with another out-of-town voicetracker anyway.

John Potter did indeed beat L & W in the ratings, which is why I remember it as a surprise to us when he was let go. PD John Morgan also fired morning news guy Dave Faneuf, and that may also account for the ratings drop after they left.
I don’t doubt the research was negative when he started, Lou. He replaced 9-year morning man Austin of Boston so it was a bit of a shock to the diehards, but my parents grew to love Potter’s show. Besides all that, he was a super nice guy.
