530am:
Oldies website says Dale Dorman and The Breakfast Club is on the air. Nope.
JJ Wright is in this morning. June Knight is in this morning. Mauzy Stafford is not in this morning (some other woman with traffic) but Mauzy's pic is still on the site. Mauzy tends to take the week off following a June Knight week off anyway.
No Christmas music (yet).

No Christmas music (yet).
Around 6:20, JJ mentioned the Secret Santa promo later on around 7:40 and also said "And, no, we won't be playing Christmas music...yet." Meanwhile, as I mentioned him earlier in the thread, Bruce Palmer is back on The Pike this morning but still no sign of Chris Engel who has completely disappeared. Adam Webster from Oldies 98-9 had the 6:25 news update for Bruce's show while, moments earlier, Jen Carter of WXLO's Zito and Jen had the news update for Adam's show. I don't know who is doing the news on WXLO. I'm heading to work now. Goodbye.

[ I can see them putting Karen Blake in mornings...and maybe JJ in middays (although I think he would have to tone down his energy level)
I had to turn the volume down this morning.

I could actually see Chris Zito and Jen Carter on Oldies103.3.Think about it.The station is going to keep updating its library to include more 80s music. They both seem to be 40-ish give or take. They would have to ditch the pop culture talk but they're not really a cutsey type pairing. It's hard to compare who would take over due to Dale Dorman's act but I doubt they want a Dale Dorman act. There's a Jay Beau Jones connection with those two and sooner or later someone has to rescue them from Worcester and Citadel.Frankly the morning Boston competition is strong due to people on air with a history in the market so unless WODS is going to steal someone with a history in the market or move someone up to that shift there's no alternative but to bring in new faces that will be there for a longer run as the music changes.

Weird not having Dale on... I read another post that said he more of less went out with "Okay Gang..we...won't see you Monday" in a quiet, unceremonious voice(as if the security guards were standing right over him type feeling). Was anything else said? Wonder if a soundbyte will surface? Whatever.
Dale is a real pro, and has a long history with Boston radio. In fact not long ago they were pumping the fact it was "Home of Dale Dorman and his 40th year on the radio in Boston!". There was some mention of a large party in the Fall too, I guess not now. He grew more quiet and restrained in the last couple of years. In fact, in the morning they'd do 20 minutes of music and June Knight and you'd be hard pressed at first to realize he was even there. Weren't they like #1 Arbitron ratings in the last two years and then fell off precipitously(and underdog WZLX shot from the teens to #3 or 4 recently doing lots better whereas Oldies fell into the teens)? And I felt-having been an avid follower of Dale's, that he sometimes talked like a gun was at his head, almost scripted within the last two years. In the start I remember him having this hilarious banter with Paula Street about her visit to the town of "Athol" Mass, with him going "Wha? Say that again Paula? Without the lisp?..etc etc". That's Dale's quickness and wit he was known for. All that just kind of stopped in the last two years.
Also, remember Dale was out for the count with some undisclosed condition for a chunk of summer in July and August. They juggled Blake, Wright and others in the morning just saying "Dale is out and will be back when he's feeling better, which will be real soon"(which went on for about five weeks or so)
This morning it was, as noted JJ Wright and June Knight("Wright and Knight! Mornings!"?) and JJ signed off (and you could tell something was up and they grinned all the way through it) going "We'll see you tommorrow. I guess?" and trailed off with his trademarked chortle. June was talking through her teeth and acting very forced. Being "happy-while-pissed-off sound". No mention at all of Dale. Paula Street comes on and again, missing that usual handover from Dale.
The station is too repetitive and some former favorite standards are just not played anymore. One thing that rankled me, alot was during one of their "Top 500" countdowns, they played the song "Proud to Be An American" by Lee Greenwood. VERY shmaltzy in my own opinion, I got tired of it fast but I could see it's appeal. And next, oddly, was John Lennon's "Give Peace a Chance". The weekender DJ, just CUT it off after maybe 5 or 6 seconds and said quietly "That was John Lennon at number 61" and didn't even mention the name of the song. It *seemed* so damn PC it was scary. I emailed them about it and was told it was a "mistake". Hmmmm. In fact, they did it twice because it was one of those count A-Z one way and then the other way Z-A back.
Just stuff I've noticed. It amazes me how even a legend can be just, persona non grata. No goodbyes, no nothin'.
Oh, they're promoting "11 weeks until Xmas music!". So do the calendar math. Oooooh boy.

radioman1818 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BRING BACK JOHN POTTER!!!
(Not)
Wait.. Who? Actually if you want to go back and look at the monthly trends for the time Potter was at Oldies you'll find that his was the last morning show on WODS to beat L&W in the ratings! Potter's plug was pulled because the PD wanted to hire his best friends and bring them up from Providence so he did.

Is this claim true? Anyone want to go back and look at the numbers to verify? When was John Potter let go? Potter's plug was pulled because...
Potter's plug was pulled because he was bad.....and they thought they could easily do better. (It wasn't that easy.) ...because the PD wanted to hire his best friends and bring them up from Providence so he did.
Was that Paul Perry? How were his ratings?

103.3 was never #1, especially not in the mornings. A couple of times a few years ago, WODS beat WMJX to be the #1 "adult music station" in Boston 12+, but they weren't #1 in the mornings. Lorin & Wally on WROR have blown away WODS (and also WZLX) in morning drive from long before Dale was hired five years ago. WZLX hasn't seen ratings within the top five in ages. I'm sure it bills well for them, but they're generally below WROR and (co-owned) WODS.

a mea-culpa to the powers-that-be at WODS ...
my earlier post about Harry Nelson was errant. Harry did offer a month's notice, but was more than graciously treated by WODS in this regard, and was welcomed to work out his remaining shifts, but was told that covering those shifts wouldn't be a problem.
Harry does have a venture or two that require his attention, and his juggling of airshifts and these other responsibilities got to the point where he needed to focus on the primary (other venture) and had to step away from the fun stuff (airshifts).
my hopes are that wheverever the pieces fall in regards to WODS that it remains a Boston radio landmark. roast 'em, toast 'em and post 'em!
