I’ll hand it to the HD Digital Radio Alliance. iBiquity CEO Bob “Booble” Stuble, HD Digital Radio Alliance head Peter “Sgt. Bilko” Ferrara, and his sidekick and soon-to- be replacement Lyin’ Diane Warren sure know how to flaunt their fraud with zeal.

HD radio? 250.00??!! My 20 year old boombox sounds and receives better than that, you know the one with the paint drips on it and clothes hanger antenna that the painters threw into the dumpster?

"Inside Radio also claimed that – here are the exact words – the Alliance hopes to sell its one-millionth HD Radio by the end of the year."

Ah, that elusive one million sales goal.  The HD Alliance's holy grail.

I got an HD radio for my birthday.  I use it primarily to DX analog FM signals from cities 200 to 300 miles away.

I have the Sony XDR-S3hd table radio. I bought it more for FM adjacent-channel selectivity and good AM performance rather than for getting HD radio reception. I did however get HD reception from a few 50 kW AM stations at night.

I thought about getting me the sangean HD Radio 1x up from the one I have and have it on analog only.  Maybe I might could get Country legends on it with a dipole?  It may be possible if KNTE would turn off their HD.

Buy the Sony XDR-F1HD tuner.  You can get it for less than $100.   Sometimes, a lot less.  It simply outperforms my Sangean HDT-1 and costs less.  If the Sony won't get the station you are looking for, probably nothing will.

HD aside, it is a very fine FM tuner.  There is even a web site that will give you instructions for a modification that will shut off the HD function.  Caution though.  Unless you are handy with a soldering iron, I do not recommend entering into that adventure without some expert guidance.

I have no idea, but as I said, the Sony beats the Sangean.  Both are very good radios.  I own one of each.  I don't have a Yamaha to compare it to.  It is hard to imagine that it would be much better.  The Sony is only $99 retail.  It gives a lot of bang for the buck.

I have no financial interest in any of these devices.  It is just my opinion from the "cheap seats."

Definitely does on AM reception. AM sound, no. The T-85 sounds better on both bands to me. The Sony rolls off the high end noticeably, especially on FM (and even more when it locks). HD sound is brighter on AM and less static (assuming you can get a lock), but it sounds artificial (since it is above about 4k, as I understand how the algorithm works).

FM reception is close, but the T-85 will hold signals the Sony will drop at the extreme edge of reception. It may not matter to all but the most manic- they're both very sensitive and selective tuners.

Wow!  1 million receivers!  Let's see, 140 million voted in the election.  It has taken how long to sell 1 million receivers?  I smell success for HD.  In about 80 years.
