You gotta give CKLW credit for dipping into the edges of the pop format back then, too -- probably more during the daytime, since I recall a few surprises on the school bus ride every day back home to Point Place.  Does anybody remember hearing Tammy Wynette's "Stand By Your Man" on CKLW?

They did, and I do.  The song peaked at 10 on their chart.  True Top 40 radio.

I don't specifically remember hearing "Stand by Your Man" on CKLW, but don't doubt it was there. I don't join the chorus of pretending that I loved hearing Bobby Goldsboro slam into the Doors, or Donna Fargo into April Wine. I had not heard of "dayparting" when I was in junior high, but I knew if I had a sick day from school or we had a day off for weather or teacher's meetings, the music on CK was kinda gonna suck.

That's interesting.  In the early 1970s, it never occurred to me that they dayparted music.  I rarely heard them mornings or afternoons as I was in grade/high school.  But by the time we were out for the day, they were rockin'.  Now I'm wondering if I would've noticed the difference as some of you did.  P.S.  Tracked down the "Awaiting On You All" cover.  It's by Silver Hawk apparently.  CK added it April 5, 1971.  Anyone know if it was Cancon?

It's too bad I didn't get to hear CKLW or WJR in its heyday. WJR still brings a big signal at night all the way to Charleston, SC, but the station is so much watered down from what it used to be. CKLW was a good station, from the airchecks, and WJR was the 50,000 watt voice of the Midwest.

Does anyone know when WJR stopped playing music?

At night, WJR vaguely comes in to Tampa. No trace of CKLW at all.

800 might had well been 1490 in most of the U.S. back in the day I got CKLW in Gainesville FL. Much more crowded frequency plus CKLW sends a lot of their night power straight east so as to avoid most of the U.S.

Gr8oldies,

Do you know when CKLW changed their nighttime pattern to go mostly east?  You're certainly right about the 800 frequency being cluttered (along with many others; I guess we have more unofficial "graveyard" channels than ever before.)  I did receive CKLW during this past winter, just once and that was the first time, I had been able to receive them in at leasat 4 or 5 years and the reception was pretty weak.

As far as 760 WJR, I'm about 25 miles s.w. of Tampa and I can't receive WJR at all due to the local 760, licensed to Brandon, FL (a suburb, east of Tampa); I'm in one of their nighttime lobs and they completely cover up WJR; can't even hear WJR in the background.  The local 760 is regional Mexican and I can sometime hear Cuba in the background, but never WJR.

At my 2nd listening post about 73 miles n.n.e. of here, I can receive WJR albeit , a weak signal most nights. (That's assuming that the Brandon 760 doesn't "forget to power down", which they've had a good memory on that count lately, after a complaint got to the FCC.)

I'm thinking maybe 10 years ago, maybe a little more.

Thanks, Gr8oldies!

That makes it more of a miracle that I received
CKLW this past winter in greater metro Ridge Manor East,FL  (approx 49 miles due east of Orlando)

THAT was a good catch! What time of night? Around sunset or later?
