KISW & The End

An eventful day for both stations. First off BJ Shea signs a new 5 year deal. Many might not like his show, but let's give credit where credit is due. He is dominating in KISW's target demo, and looking from the outside, I can't find a morning show in Seattle that has worked harder over the past few years than BJ and his crew. So this new contract is well deserved.

On to KNDD. CBS is flipping KLSX and Carolla is out. Does that mean the end of his show in Seattle. And if so, is this a perfect time for Entercom to finally pull the plug on KNDD or will they just give mornings to another intern or part-timer?

Nice! I was listening a couple days ago and BJ called Luke Burbank "a homo with a night show" --- maybe it wasn't BJ but it was one of the crew, a lot of people were trashing on him so it was hard to tell voices apart. It was funny stuff.

Kind of surprising anyone was inked to a five year deal prior to the PPM coming out.  You would think Entercom would wait three months to see if the show did well in PPM.  I can't imagine why anyone would sign a new deal without a PPM provision.  What happens if in the PPM BJ drops to tenth place?  Odder things have happened in other markets.  Seems an odd move.  In Chicago, LA, NY, Boston, many talents were released and many signed to deals, but only after the PPM numbers arrived, not before.

What happens to Adam Corolla now that CBS dropped him.  What will KNDD do?  Wait until the PPM and see if they are staying in the format?  Wouldn't it be funny if they just played alternative music in the morning and it did better than KISW or KZOK in morning drive.  Similar thing happened in Houston.   You never know in this crazy radio/PPm world we are about to enter.   Bj Shea would laugh all the way to the bank with his new five year deal.  Congratulations to him, by the way. In the old diary system he was king 25-54 mornings and owned men 25-54 the last three books.  Still odd Entercom wouldn't wait for the PPM.

Congrats to BJ. He's a lot better off than the rest of Seattle's remaining air talent........

But pulling the plug on KNDD is gonna hurt a lot of people. Maybe it's time another group took the modern rock reins because it's pretty obvious KNDD has clearly lost it's way. But it was also a long dark cold three years between KJET and KNDD.......

Regardless, modern rock is definitely a Seattle format and somebody WILL take a stab at it.......

The End should just drop Adam Carolla, and play, uh, alternative music.  If they did that I might actually listen!  I can't stand any of those morning talk shows on music stations.  If I want talk I listen to AM 1090, or sometimes sportsradio.  But when I want music I know NOT to turn on The End, KISW, KZOK, etc.   Music station talk shows suck!

I agree.  A music station should play music.  If I want talk I turn to a talk station.  I wouldn't mind KISW or KNDD in the morning if they, at least, played some music.  I like 100.3 CKKQ out of Victoria in the morning (and all the time).  There is some talk, they're funny, and they play music.  I wish their signal was a bit stronger where I live.  Way better than the KISW "gutter" talk in the morning and I've been done with the End for a while.

This is indeed a unique situation.

For as long as BJ's show has been around in Seattle, it's no real surprise to see he's got the deal Mr. Anderson and the rest of the crew wanted and negotiated. The show has been pretty much unchanged since it's move from The Buzz at the beginning of 2006. Entercom waited and squeezed this deal out as far as they could without sending BJ on one of his "vacations" while they rerun "Best-Of" broadcasts. For the listeners of KISW and The BJ Shea Morning Experience, this deal couldn't have came at a better time. This show has worked as hard as anyone in the industry and is a stellar example for other radio shows around the country.   

While Adam's show will run LIVE for the rest of the week then run re-runs for an entire month before Westwood One pulls the feed, The End will have the chance to develop something for morning drive. If my estimations are correct, I'd think we would hear "The Robot Voice" and wall-to-wall music on The End during Morning Drive. It would surely be different for some people around there.

Secondly, this also might open up another time slot on KISW since there has been no word if Tom Leykis is going to continue to do his syndicated show.

If memory serves me correctly, once KLSX flips formats, KISW would be Tom's largest affiliate station. According to Westwood One, Tom's shows are no longer available.

I thought KISW was Tom's ONLY affiliate remaining outside of KLSX.......

According to a quote Tom gave The OC Register, Westwood One is no longer syndicating the show...

In response to a request for comment, Tom Leykis e-mailed that his show is no longer being syndicated nationally.

"Westwood One did not want to keep paying the support staff who engineer and edit our two shows, so we mutually agreed to part ways. We are in talks right now to move syndication of the daily show, the weekend edition, and the Tasting Room, and we should have something to announce shortly," he wrote.

As to the KLSX format change question, he said, "I am under a no-cut contract through March 31, 2012, and we are number one in men 25-54 ... top-rated talk show in the market adults 25-54 (first time since Howard Stern left). That is all I know."
