A 70 year old man who had his cable cut off, tried to get a DTV converter box working but doesn't, gets drunk, and shoots his TV set. This leads to police being called, which leads to a SWAT team being dispatched because of the weapon. He is taken into custody after a standoff with police. No one is hurt.

Idiots exist in both the analog and digital worlds.

Instead of the analog "nightlight" service, this guy needs a "dim bulb" channel.

However, since he has now destroyed his old analog set, he can now replace it with a digital model.

DTV transition leads to gunfire?  Really?  Only one station in the Joplin/Pittsburg market cut over to digital on 2/17 - KOAM.  The rest of the stations in the market continue to broadcast in analog.

That sounds like much more of a drinking while mentally ill issue than a DTV transition issue.

Maybe that station was his favorite and he could no longer watch his favorite show.  This is what happens to some people when they lose Dr. Phil.  Grin

The local Joplin newspaper reported he was angry because his CABLE Service had been cut off.
So, it wasn't the dreaded "Digital Transition" after all!

Just being "Digital" is no longer enough of a gimmick to get the public's attention.

On our local 9:00 news this evening (WTVW Fox 7, Evansville), Fox News interviewed the Webb City, MO police chief, who confirmed the part about the converter box.  The chief also said this was not the man's first run-in with the law involving a firearm.

As I posted on my blog the other day (at jakesdtvblog.blogspot.com, if you're interested), the day is coming soon when we'll see the following message inside the manuals of converter boxes:

"Before installing your new converter, please have an assistant handy to lock up all alcoholic beverages and firearms."

Thankfully this didn't turn out worse than it did, even if it does have a darkly humorous twist to it ...

The suspect was reported to have said, "I WANT MY MTV!!"
