There's hardly any "techno" on Power 106...or pretty much any station in the U.S. at the moment. However, I do agree that some house is played on occasion.
But they really are more of a "Hits & Hip Hop" rather than "where hip hop lives", and the same with "Atlanta's new #1 for hip hop" - 95.5 The Beat! They are both rhythmic stations that stick to a true rhythmic format. Hot 97 in New York also switched back to rhythmic, but they have a very strong urban lean and stay off of many rhythmic hits, so they make sense using a "hip hop" slogan.
For the past few years, many rhythmics have been using hip hop slogans. However, I think Power chooses to continue using it mostly because they have heritage and pretty much no real urban competition. They have always stayed mostly true to the rhythmic sound though.
Anyway, I do love Power 106 as is, and my visiting L.A. is what got me (back) into Power 98.3 here in Phoenix. I can't say which one I like more because they both have their benefits, but certain things that Power 106 where Hip Hop lives has to offer, Power 98.3 Arizona's #1 hit music station" doesn't, and vice versa. They are both really hits & hip hop. L.A. has no "real" hip hop station, and Arizona's hit music channel is really 104.7 Kiss FM because they truly play all the hits... or most of them.. even the ones that are not urbanized... But I guess anyone could be hit music because after all, even opera, jazz, and country are playing HITS. On the other hand, this doesn't all work with "hip hop" though...
Changing Power 106 to where techno / house lives would be 90 times more absurd than just keeping the hip hop slogan, since they lean much more towards the urban side of hip hop, r&b, and electro-pop hits and very very, very very very rarely ever play any real pure dance hits. Well... many may disagree within the dance community, but certain Black Eyed Peas songs I do consider to be "real" dance... Anyway, no usage of "techno" slogan for Power 106. It wouldn't even have made sense for them to do that in 1996-1999. "Today's Hottest Music", "Hits & Hip Hop", "L.A.s Party Station", all very appropriate for their current state, but they are definitely not a hip hop station, regardless of whether or not they play certain Jay-Z, Maino...etc. songs other rhythmics might not play. Z90.3 and Blazin 98.9 is more urban than Power, even with all the rhythmic stuff they also play.
