This is a big loss for the program.  Even more than Imus (with Charles McCord) or Howard (with Robin Quivers), Franken with his irratic and undisciplined needs a "voice of reason" to reign him in (and make sure he takes breaks when he is supposed to).  She is a skilled and experienced broadcaster and her role will be difficult to fill.  It will be tough for anyone to come in a year-and-a-half into the show and keep Franken in check without supressing him.  Katherine did both well.

The article in the St. Paul Pioneer Press suggests she wasn't entirely happy away from the Twin Cities.

Franken has already made noises about leaving, as well.  This may be good news for Thom Hartmann (and maybe AAR was wise to lock down Hartmann and have him waiting in this wings).

Disappointed to hear she's leaving.....she should have a show of her own if she has the energy to attempt it for herself...if not, I will wish her well. She did her a good job at railing in Franken when he strayed. I loved the chemistry she and Joe Consason had when they co-hosted the show. I think that should be looked at as a way to keep a good solid pro like Lampher.

If she's not up for it, then I wish her the absolute best in her new career as author.

My question now is "who gets to take the second slot until Franken leaves?"

I totally agree, she did a great job, keeping things on track.

I'll miss her. Best of Luck!

Katherine Lanpher had a "special summer" AAR show of her own on weekends during the summer, called "Liberal Arts" (see pasted below).

Liberal Arts Every Saturday at 1pm

Air America Radio's "Liberal Arts" is back for its special summer series.  Join host Katherine Lanpher, veteran journalist and co-host of "The Al Franken Show," for an hour of conversation and performance you won't hear anywhere else.  Taped in front of a live audience at the Housing Works Bookstore Cafe in New York, "Liberal Arts" mixes it up each week with singer-songwriters, authors, actors and comedians. You’ll hear new songs from your favorite singers, meet some rising stars and hear humorists, novelists and memoirists read from their latest books.

Now if they could get rid of Al Franken, AAR can work on upgrading this time period.  How about Thom Hartmann or Bill Press?

i second the motion. Lanpher is a better radio voice than Franken, and Franken is a better writer than talker.

The only "noises" Franken has made about leaving are the same "noises" that he's been making for more than a year -- that he may challenge Minnesota Senator Norm Coleman in 2008 -- three years from now.  It's funny how the anti-AAR crowd always leaves out the "three years from now" angle.

Lanphor was good...Franken is just not funny on the radio... as people are saying he should go back to being an author...he should write a book about Sean Hannity...
