I listened for about an hour today....not bad. He's not what he once was, but he was still pretty entertaining.
It definitely confirmed what I thought before - that ESPN paired him with the wrong guy. East coast jerks normally don't work in this market. Choppy was unlistenable, and Greggo paired with him was even more unlistenable.
At the same time, you can't blame ESPN - they figured they'd drop him in a time slot that no one listens to see if he could keep his nose clean (he couldn't).
I hope he gets his act together and lands somewhere. I'd love to have two good shows to listen to at 6p during my drive home from work instead of just one.

Greggo was a sidekick that caught the perfect wave...Good for him...but he obviously was never a "top talent".

I might disagree with that.
It's not like Rhyner was a powerhouse of Dallas radio at the time the Ticket started. At the time the Ticket started, Rhyner really hadn't done dinky since the old Zoo days (I didn't even know the guy was still in the market). If anything, when the Ticket started he and Greggo were paired together and stuck on middays (radio equivalent of a lounge act), and Bayless and Cooperstein were the ones taken seriously.
I think they BOTH caught lightning in a bottle. It's not like the Hardline has been anywhere near the greatness it once was. I'm a huge P1, and probably always will be, but listening Rhyner mail it in, while Corby attempts to be taken seriously is almost painful.
That being said, they're still leaps and bounds above anything else in their time slot, and that really is all that counts. That's not to say their show is anywhere near as entertaining as it once was, as much as it speaks to how badly their competition blows.
You don't have to outrun the grizzly bear. You just have to outrun the guy standing next to you.
Pull Rhyner away from the Ticket, stick him with Choppy for about 6 months, and see if he's a still a ratings juggernaut (not likely). Rhyner & Williams created that tidal wave together, and the one that didn't get coked out and screw it up is the one that can continue to ride it. I don't think anyone can seriously deny that.

One of the best posts i have seen in a long time. Excellent and right on the mark. Still a P1, but the station aint what is used to be....but neither is any other station in the country.

Good post, except for the fact that Greggo and Choppy's ratings were the 3rd best on that station in the last 3 months of Greggo's time there behind Mike and Mike, and Galloway. That said, the show is way better now with Choppy and Wally paired together.

Saying that nobody listens to ESPN makes you sound like an idiot. They have more listeners per week than the Ticket, shown by their high Cume advantage, people just listen longer to the Ticket, because their content (guy talk) is broader and easier to listen to for an extended period of time. You obviously are a TicketHead, and have your opinion, which is fine, but don't make it seem like nobody listens to the station or that show just because you don't.

You're right. I stand corrected...a radio show that comes on in a time slot when nobody listens (whether your the Ticket or otherwise) is the last bastion of radio ad sales....
If Choppy and "insert host here" are so great, they'd be on in a time slot where someone is actually listening (morning/afternoon drive).
There's a reason ESPN stuck Greg Williams in that time slot. They figured they'd park him in a time slot when no one is listening, with a host no one is listening to, and see if Williams could keep his nose clean long enough to move him to a time slot where they could make some money off his talent. He didn't, and they cut ties. No blood; no foul. No advertisers were offended, because most of Dallas didn't even know he was there....
I'll sit back and eagerly await RJ Choppy's meteoric rise to the top, but my gut feeling is his talent will dictate he's going to toil away in his time slot for the remainder of his time in this market.

Greggo and Choppy had the 3rd best ratings on the station? Consider their time slot. Was that their show that got those ratings, or was it Mavericks end of regular season and playoff basketball that got those ratings?
