Friday, July 10, KSWD 100.3, a station that can be heard in coastal San Diego county where I live, is having a KMET reunion all day. Several KMET jocks will be there including Dr. Demento, who will be on from 7-8pm. Some people like me used to sometimes drive to Orange or Los Angeles counties to listen to his show, and sometimes tape it. In honor of that event, I made my song "Goin' Back to L.A." available as a free download for a limited time. It's off of my locally produced CD "Yes Parking Anytime." You can download the song and read more about my CD by going to my webpage: http://www.davidtanny.com/900004.htmYou may also request my song for airplay on The Dr. Demento Show. Please go to this page and request "Goin' Back to L.A." by David Tanny here: http://www.drdemento.com/requestHappy Independence Day and thank you for your support.

Sorry I missed it. FYI, Dr. Dimento is nominated to the radio hall of fame in the "NATIONAL – PIONEER" category, along with: Dick Orkin, Suspense, and WLS National Barn Dance. To vote between them, you can go to: https://nrhof.votenet.com/nrhof/register (Nice to hear from you, David.)

I was shocked when I moved to LA in the mid 80s and found that Dr. Demento, which I thought was only a syndicated show, was on LIVE on KMET. Wow. The show was much fresher in its live incarnation. You even got "local" sets, almost always featuring one of the coolest songs about LA, "Pico and Sepulveda."
It would be neat if The Sound let Dr. D broadcast on Sunday nights again. I'd especially like to see Dr. D do his original shows where he did not just do comedy, but played all kinds of genres.

No one would like to see the Good Dr. restored to his rightful place on Sunday nights with two full hours of Mad Music and Crazy Comedy more than I. In my view, it is a crime that he is not on at least in syndication, even if it has to be midnight to 2 am on Monday morning.
That said, there is no way it's going to happen. The good Doctor's glory days mirrored the rise and fall of his flagship KMET, which means his best shows are now at least 22 years in the rearview mirror. I listened to his syndicated show into the 90's when he was on KLSX, but even then the new material was not as good as the classic tracks, and you can only spin "There coming to take me away Ha Ha" so many times if it doesn't have current good material to go with it.
But the main reason it won't come back is that programming it means you are either trying to be a KMET clone (suicide as I mentioned earlier) or you have no creative ideas for your station today. For the Sound or any other station to be successful, even in the classic rock genre, you have to be looking forward for the next 2, 5, and 10 years as to the demos that set the viability of the station. All of the Dr's demos that he brings in are either past the 55 mark that advertisers don't care about or will get there in the next 10 years (your humble Flipping writer not included! I am still young damn it!). So its lose-lose all the way around for a programmer today.
Like I said, I wish it weren't so, but them's the facts!

I'm looking for KIQQ airchecks from 1980-1985. Hit me up! I also have many 60's, 70's, and 80's airchecks to trade.

If Demento went a little bit more esoteric and mixed the novelty tunes with "normal" (but interesting) music, he could probably do his show on a public station in LA. Problem is KPCC went all talk, KCSN dumped the local stuff, and KCRW doesn't have the sense of humor to hire Demento (humor needs to be dry, like "Le Show," to get on 89.9)
Truthfully, in the doldrum hours of 10pm-Midnight Sunday, I don't think having Demento on would do any harm or even be noticed except by fans. It would only serve to bring in some more listeners, and probably wouldn't put anyone off the station. Yes, it's "looking back" and outdated, but so is the entire Sound's approach of playing mostly 30 year old music, so heck - why not?

Why does it have to be a rocker? Whats wrong with a late sunday night on KRTH and WCBS-FM? I remember listening to him on WNBC when they were playing most of 2 those stations songs as current hits.

Is there a catch-22? I.e. there's not a broadcast to showcase new novelty records because not enough good recordings are being made, and those recordings are not being made because there's no longer a show to broadcast them? However, I would think that in the age of itunes, there would still be a market for them. So is there some other reason the new material is not as good?

To the question above about why material isn't so great... I think the world at large makes too much fun of itself for this kind of approach to make any impact. My $1.53 (plus tax/license + s/h)
