HFX Broadcasting (aka: Evanov) has been granted a license today for a new Triple A station in Halifax at 105.1 with 32,000 watts (45,000 watts maximum ERP). The new station will be a sister to CHR Z103.5 (CKHZ) in Halifax.

Applications by Acadia Broadcasting which also proposed a Triple A facility on 105.1 and Frank Torres who had hoped to expand his network of Blues stations to Halifax on 99.1 were both rejected. Also denied was as application by CICR 99.1 in Parrsboro,NS for a power increase from 50 watts to 500 watts.

Huh Is that their new name? Or just the name they're using in Halifax?

HFX is the Halifax subsidary of Evanov Communications. This ownership chart from the CRTC site provides the details.

I was glad to see HFX get this license.  They did great job launching Z103 a few years ago and the station continues to have a great sound.  I hope they do as good of a job with the new station.
However,  I've seen some print advertising recently promoting that Z103 was local and independent when it really isn't either.  Thought this was a little deceptive.

Not sure about "Local" but Evanov/HFX is still Independent. A smaller company. Not big like Rogers, Shaw/Corus or even Astral.
