WQXY Logger-Reel Aircheck

I have now put on my website an mp3 of a complete side of a logger reel from WQXY, Baton Rouge from 1972. This runs 20 hours and change long! I'm sorry I didn't get to put this on as streaming audio. The mp3 is nearly 300MB in size. If you're interested, you can click the download link at:

Well, it's funny, the things you learn after-the-fact. At first, I just heard the first reel I got out of the box (not in its entirety, mind you), thought it'd be interesting to put on my website, and just put it on. It wasn't until later, while I was hearing other reels, that I found out some interesting things:
1. The station - are you ready for this - actually signed off! They did a local hourly newscast on the hour, and after their midnight newscast, they signed off. At other times, they did an 11:55PM newscast before signing off at midnight.
2. The side of the reel I put on the website has Sept. 30, 1972 from the hour of 5PM to signoff, and then recording resumes during the 6AM hour of the 31st, and the tape runs out a few minutes after the 8PM newscast.
3. There are other reels I have that have better sound quality than this, and I'm glad to say that by the time of a Mar. 9-11, 1973 reel I have, they had ditched the ridiculous "Music - Only for a Woman" slogan.

While hearing another reel I have from 1969, I found out that during that time, it was a 24-hour station. So more mystreries are springing up ...

First of all, I made a mistake on the date - that's August 30, 1972.
And now, the reason for this post: I now have streaming audio of the last 4 hours and 25 minutes of programming from this day on my page. I found out that 4 hours and 25 minutes is about how long I can have a streaming file without problems. And once again, I know the sound quality isn't too good, but I have other reels that sound better than this, and I'll have audio from a few of those sometime.

Thank you for posting these.

On one of the airchecks, the signon announces WQXY's tower location as "Siegen at Honore Lane," but from my observations, the only broadcast tower in that area is the 30/WLFT tower along Rieger behind the Hummer dealership, and to the best of my knowledge, that's a fairly recent build (2002 or later.) Was the WQXY tower located in the lot where the SuperTarget/Petco/Conn's/etc... now stands, or was it somewhere else? And when was it dismantled?

Now that is interesting. I recall the pasture...back when Siegen was a little 2 lane road, but I do not recall a tower. My question would be why? That was really isolated back in those days...
