back in the mid 90's i worked for the nashville tennessean delivering newspapers 7 days a week..from 1am til 5:30 am..i discovered art bell and i think his show is literally what kept me from falling asleep at the wheel..he seemed to make the most bizarre topics seem normal..along with the guests that appeared to be "experts" in the given field...after i left that job for normal hours..i never listened again..but heard something about him having to leave the show for "very personal reasons"..something about his son  as i recall..never knew the real story..didn't know the show was still on..
