Apparently so.

I have discovered tonight while driving through Anaheim there is an new radio station in Orange County, ID'ed as 101.5 KOCI-LP Newport Beach.

Coming across the station I thought it was KGB-FM from San Diego, given they were playing classic rock, until I heard the ID.

I wonder how much bleed-over this station has with KGB-FM in southern Orange County, which I am assuming is apart of their listening area.

Anybody have further information on this station?

It's been around for a year or so.  Their transmitter is on the rooftop of a bank building at 17th/Westcliff and Irvine on the Costa Mesa side.  They play decent music but I wish they would have picked another frequency as KGB-FM had a rather good signal in coastal southern OC.  There is also a LPFM on 91.1 that interferes with 91X if you are in south OC.  Ugh!

Cruising Warner Ave from PCH toward Irvine KOCI starts to bleed over KGB but during the summer inversion period there is barely a whisper of KOCI as KGB just absolutely tattoos that little cupcake candle.

It's been up there for a few years. Their coverage area is primarily to Newport Beach, Irvine and Santa Ana because the transmitter is based in Newport/Costa Mesa

The KOCILP met the FCC mileage separation requirements to be on 101.5. KWVSLP Malibu is also on 101.5. There is not a lot KGB-FM can do about the stations except move them to other frequencies. Since neither station is causing "interference" by the FCC's definition, KGB's hands are tied.

KGB-FM is a regular on 101.5 in LA and these 2 LPFM's are most likely on 101.5 as the only frequency the meets the FCC allocation criteria in their areas.

A check of the FCC's LPFM frequency selection software at http://www.fcc.gov/mb/audio/lpfm/lpfm_channel_finder.html tells the story for the LA area.

And that...is just plain crazy.

Interesting to note that this station on 101.5 features the legendary Jimmy Rabbit (former KRLA, KROQ, KMET) and also Brent Kahlen (former KROQ, KNAC) in their line-up.
