Here's Sam's Obit from the Wichita Eagle.  I did not know that he was a Navy veteran.

Thank you Dave Compton for emailing this to us this morning.

The Ampex 601 of which you can see the profile of at the far right was for recording those spots twice an hour from Mutual.

Mutual?  What in the world was Mutual?  And don't give me any BS about a radio network being owned by Amway and claiming to be the world's largest network.  Or how you were required to intro each newscast with "setting the pace to follow" or some nonsense like that.   And then there was the mirror ball Sam made for the Pelitek Disco at the Royal Villa.   Those were the days and we didn't even realize it.   Appreciate you sharing the photo Rick!

The exact phrase just came to me,  each Mutual newscast was introduced with  "setting the pace for others to follow"   which was then followed by whatever was the current legal id/ slogan at the time.

There was also the "alternate intro" once mumbled by Willie Edwards, "sitonthefaceformotherstofollow."

The 3 Tapecaster Cart Machines were for all the currents and spots. All the Gold was on Reel to Reel. Cheapest stereo board you could find. Consumer Reel to Reels and cheapest Tapecasters you could find (ITC? Not even close) Worst POS Equiped station I had ever seen. Even WSGH/WKZL or whatever you want to call them with their PA Board behind the WAAA Transmitter (circa 1973) prior to the station going stereo was probably better.

I took this photo of Sam in 1976 at WRQK - http://www.dollaraholler.com/freighttrain
When was the RQK studio revamped with the production room put on the left and news on the right? That's what was there when I got there in late 1980. ( post-the first 800 foot tower fall and loss of the pool).

98.7 WRQK was a ROCKIN station that could be heard darn near every summer morning Down East - I'm talkin' Greenville, New Bern, Wilson, etc.

I was born with elevator music on FM, but became glued to WRQK, WQDR, Zam11/K94, WHSL, and finally WXQR and WRBK.

But that Greensboro rocker was ELECTRIC!! Thanks for the pic. Now I know where the magic came from...

I think it was sometime around 1978.  I worked there until I graduated college in '78 and remember those two little studios being built on the roof just before I left.

What were these two stations?

I can't believe that on a college campus in 1979 I never once heard WRQK and knew it. I remember thinking it was strange that area didn't have rock station like WROQ. But all the guys seemed to listen to either WKZL or Z-93.

V-Chimp - you must have gone to school in Winston-Salem and that's why everybody listened to Z93.  Back in those days, there wasn't as much crossover listening between Greensboro and WS.  Wes Jones and Willie Edwards were the morning personalities on WRQK.
