Christmas music is all about hope and joy. Like a belt of spiked egg nog, it takes you away from thinking about real-life problems. Non-alcoholic, non-pharmaceutical escapism. And it's free!

True - but there's a LOT more people whose "real-life problems" are MUCH more severe than they were a year ago and a few choruses of "Jingle Bells" ain't gonna take away from the fact you have no job, no money and no home.

I also agree the economy has nothing to do with it.  Don't forget, last year around the holidays we were in a similar economic crisis mode, and most Xmas ratings were through the roof.

A similar economic mode? Have you been living under a rock this year?

Unemployment is TWICE what it was in 2008.  More homes have been foreclosed this year than in years past. More banks have failed this year than before.   What we had in '08 was a cakewalk compared to this year.

One other factor to consider - this is the first year for all-Xmas with PPM.  So we'll know for sure just how far those ratings will go "through the roof" and see how it compares with years past.

Mouthbreathers and stage moms love the stuff.  Ratings will be stratospheric.  People are escapists.

Respectfully, please check your history.  The economic crisis began in September/October of '08 with the failure of many Wall Street institutions.  Things went south well ahead of of Xmas '08.  Perhaps the public perception wasn't quite as strong, but the problems began well before Xmas '08.  Excuse me if I was only referring to listeners who were paying attention a year ago.

Amen to THAT, SRP -
- and YES - the PPM during the holidays will be interesting,  even if how radio stocks are doing otherwise...
