"Encourage" drinking at the remote?

I was by chance listening to one of the Top 40 stations doing their LIVE remotes at of the venues Saturday night. I was surprised to hear that he actually "encourages you to come and and get drunk, like I am", something to that effect. He was actually promoting this.

I know I am not the only one that heard this, but what are your thoughts?? Hey, I may have a drink at the clubs too when doing remotes, but I would never mention it on the air!!!

Well, that's why they are on-air talent and not Rhodes Scholars.

I'm sure it's not the image the station wishes to portray.  That happened in my market at a CHR/RHY that no longer exists.  The jock was doing a live broadcast from a club and encourage people to come out and get their drink on.  As luck would have it, an ice storm was pelting the market and every other station on the dial was discouraging listeners from going out if they didn't have too because of the dangerous road conditions.

Let me see if I understand you....the jock had a remote at a Bar...something the bar/liquor distributor paid good money for, I'm sure...And the jock was encouraging drinking?

And your problem with this is.....?

That the jock "said" he was drinking?  (And you believed it...he's an effective jock)
...Or that the jock was doing the job he was paid to do, and having a little fun at the same time?
Would you rather the jock say something about "drinking in moderation"? Or better yet, that he said something about it being a bad idea to come out and drink?
Oh, pulleeeze. While drinking in moderation is a noble idea, it is pretty unrealistic, especially when dealing with a CHR/Hits demo; kids who are going to be drinking. Why not at that bar?


I've witnessed many an on-the-wagon jock do a remote and say they were drinking....

Was the jock a sloppy drunk? Did he get arrested? Did someone die as a result of the jocks comments?  Where were you when Mason was in his prime?  Are you a transported being from the 1950s?  

What is your point, REALLY?

> It is part of the business you have to sell a product you dont have to be drinking but its good to drink the product your promoting...thats what you get paid for!!!!! I personally can remember doing remotes with other jocks in the area for the last couple of years and some of them did get sloppy drunk!!!That's what I was there for...to help them get home.....but to make sure they didnt get out of control.Everything has to be taking with a grain of salt with the jocks now....You have to encourage people to come out to the bar or club in particular that your hanging out at, but you dont always have to encourage drinking.....maybe a free trip or some sort...

If the jock in question at the beginning of this thread is a CC employee, they should watch out.  It's written right in the CC employee manual that consumption of alcohol is strictly prohibited while on the clock.  This includes remotes.  As a former CC employee, this issue came up a few times when I was in their employ.    I know another guy who worked for them, he was hosting a brewery tour for listeners.  The station GM said he was under no circumstances to consume any alcohol.  Mind you this was a limo trip to a BREWERY, a party with beer reps, listeners and such.  Nothing on air, not even really in public.  It was at a brewery for pete's sake.

Would the beer companies be upset to know that said jock used the word drunk at an event? I could see this being an issue with the people forking over money for the event.
