WTWK, formerly Air America for the Champlain Valley, is stunting this weekend. The new format is to be unveiled on Monday. Could oldies via satellite be making a return to the airwaves ever since Kool went classic hits?

You know "Dead Air America" is perhaps in trouble when it cannot make in the People's Republic of Burlington.

If I had been them I would have gone to a 50's-60's Oldies format since that is now not heard in the area. I think the Eve format is another lost cause for the daytime AM.

the problem i see is simply the fact that their signal gets overpowered at night. I live across the lake and i liked the progressive talk format. i wont listen to this chic station. once the sun goes down i here the CBC, even in plattsburgh. the womens talk will not help them, as for the "Dead Air America" its far from dead, they failed in burlington because WTWK only comes in for 8-12 hours a day in most the region, i am very unhappy about the decision they made and now cant here good talk in my car, only sleezballs like glen beck, rush and sean hannity. no more honest talk in plattsburgh/burlington

Well they shut off at sunset which explains the CBC.
Prog. talk may work but the TalkingRadio blog notes that in the past year, 2 stations added the format. 20 have subtracted it. In many cases it was placed on weaker signals with "computer in a closet" and no local hosts. It would have been better to get liberal hosts on bigger stations, your WVMTs and Zones, though it was a bit of an uphill battle to get going. And had it not been for Clear Channel placing Air America on some of its stations, it may not have even reached the peak of 85 (or so) stations it had.
Bottom line managers felt that sports (in many cases) would be a better sell. This is why 1390 switched to ESPN... In Boston, they couldn't really flip to sports because it was already on three other stations so they switched AAR Boston to "Rumba" Spanish. There was a need because Boston had no fulltime Spanish outlet. Clear Channel didn't put any local hosts on (exc. for one, on Sunday afternoons) and didn't promote it as well as it should have been.
Prog. talk can still succeed, maybe with the Jones network shows or AAR with the new Green ownership. It has been an uphill battle because the shows you say you don't like--Rush (Premiere), Beck (ditto), and Hannity (ABC) _were_ liked by enough people to become popular and they sold product. Thus, stations kept them and other conservative talkers on. If the likes of Big Ed Schultz, Thom Hartmann, Randi Rhodes, and Steph Miller put out a good product (some feel they do), were given a chance to be on a "big" station, etc., then who knows. "Rush wasn't built in a day" either...hey, give it time. In the meantime I wonder if there's an effort to bring prog talk back to Burl/Platt somehow. there are similar efforts in New Haven, Boston, etc. (nonstopradio.com)

I heard CBA 1070 in Moncton NB is moving to FM later this year...will there be an effort for the various 1070s in the US to be able to broadcast at night if they're daytimers?

If Goldman ever puts a liberal on WVMT, I'll buy you a case of beer. We didn't air barter spots for Trojan for years on the X because of his beliefs.
