KFRC's Frank Terry Passes Away

Not a lot of details available, but Frank Terry has died. He was Ron Jacobs' early partner in crime in the birth of Boss Radio in San Bernardino, Fresno and L.A., a first-generation Big 610 Man (famously appearing in the Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" documentary about the infamous Altamont concert) and a Country jock here at KNEW, KSAN and Froggy.

I remember him on the first 610 KFRC.

It was cancer...he'd been fighting it for 10 years. He was 68.

Frank was a class act. I'm thankful God has added him to the lineup up there. I learned alot from him during the KNEW/KSAN days and will always remember him. One of the best memories was when Terrance Crilly, Royce Redwine, and Glen Boychuk went round and round with each other on the last day of KSAN 94.9.

Terrence (not "Terrance") Crilly was Frank Terry's real name -- actually Terrence Francis Crilly, hence "Frank Terry."

Royce Redwine is Steve Jordan -- Royce Wellington Redwine, to be precise.

But I'm stumped ... who is Glenn Boychuk?

Glennboy and Frank did mornings together with Jo Thomas on KSAN 94.9 during the 90's.
Glennboy is now on 104.5 Star in Omaha, Nebraska.

I went home last night after hearing the news about Frank and played the cassette of that last day of KSAN. They played Little Texas' Kick a Little and Frank had his mic open and just at the right time when LT would sing, "You got a kick a little..." Frank inserted "Ass."
What were they gonna do?
He went to KNEW middays after that until corporate ruined that station too.

Frank Terry was on KMAKe in Fresno in '62-'63.  The KMAKe/KYNO war was raging.  In an early promotional stunt to break the "World Record" for continuous bowling, he beat his KYNO counterpart who started bowling at an alley in another part of the city shortly after Frank began his "bowl-a-thno".   The KYNO plan was that their jock had to only bowl for a few minutes past whenever Frank quit plus the few hours head start Frank had before KYNO decided to directly compete for the "Record".  I don't recall how long they bowled, maybe 3-4 days before Frank threw in the towel.  Now, the KYNO jock knew just how long he had bowl to pass Franks time.  When the KYNO jock quit, thinking he had passed Frank's time, KMAKe revealed some sort of documentation showing that Frank's "official" starting time was actually some hours earlier than what had been considered as the "starting time".

I thought it was a trick question. Glennboy was the only one from the group whose nom de radieux was essentially his real name.

Thanks, Frank, for your friendship, the many, many laughs, your outlook on life, the stories you told (never cared if they were true and still don't), the warm memories. That camping trip with John Mack in the RVs we traded! You heard me talk about my love of Basset Hounds and secretly set me up with Mongo, who's still with me today. Frank was one of the best I knew in so many ways.  He lived hard and fast in those KFRC days and loved every minute of it.
His honesty and humility were traits that matched his wit and talent.

I could barely drink or shave when I met Frank.
I do remember when I first arrived to work at KFRC coming from the east coast where I was doing afternoons in Washington, DC.  Frank, John Catchings and I were leaving KFRC at 415 Bush and walking up the hill on Bush, when Frank (wearing his cowboy hat, denum jacket, boots and jeans) felt obliged to 'command' me to "get rid of that damn sportcoat and tie (I was wearing)...if you're going to be working with the rest of us at KFRC!"  I promptly did.

We shared studios at both KFRC and KSFX and had a hell of time during those years.  Late nights at Enrico's, Vanessi's as well as dark dingy dives (Han-il) and classy (Bankers Club) watering holes all over the city.  It was a time when both radio and tv people socialized together.  It seemed as though we traveled in packs.  I don't remember ever being out alone.  It was fun.  Those were special years that I'll never forget.  Frank was always a part of things.  The swearing, the fights, the drinking, the women, the food, the friendship.  Frank was bigger than life then...and I'm sure he still is.

There are so many stories...probably left untold...just use your imagination, because it probably won't be far from what may have actually happened.

Saddle up Cowboy...for whatever lies ahead!  You will be missed.
