It's good to hear that there will be an alternative to Rick Roberts on KFMB.  I like him most of the time but sheesh...he's always so incredibly grumpy behind comprehension.  Now that KFI with Bill Handel (my alternative) continues to be neutered in terms of Sandy Eggo coverage in the morning (and now a lot of the time lately), it will be a good thing.

Bill's 5 to 6 a.m. on KFI is the best non-scripted hour on radio. It's the fourth wall exposed. You can learn a lot about the medium there.

Back to KOGO: How many news staffers will on da beach lookin' for that next news gig in Sandy Eggo? The no-spin zone is starting on the "we're not dropping our commitment" to news. Well, there's always Radio Sophie.

Chris, will any of the other AM stations in San Diego be looking to expand their news staff or try to fill their mornings with a news block, now that KOGO is going to a regular talk show format for mornings? Also, was this move by KOGO justified by slipping ratings or lower profit margins for news?

Never underestimate the power of KPBS-FM. Solid news department. That station, if true ratings were offered for non-comms, would be in the top five in Sandy Eggo.

Now that I have streaming internet radio in the car and an XM portable for when I'm sitting at poolside, about the only "radio station" I listen to any more is KPBS-FM and I have to say they have a lousy local news department: it's the only part of the radio station that makes it sound like they're affiliated with a college.

KOGO long ago stopped requiring that newscasters be actual broadcast journalists and started making disk jockeys into news readers, usually reading stuffed cranked out by low paid writers: it's not much better than the old "rip and read" system when DJ's would rip news stories from the teletype and read five minutes worth on the hour.

Why should KFI cover San Diego? They're a Los Angeles station. SD has its own news/talk stations for that.

How did you get that?

Out is Dave Mason and that's truly sad.  Here's a guy that been used and abused with 95.7, 99.3 and now KOGO.  I hope he winds up somewhere wonderful.

KFI doesn't intend to cover Sandy Eggo; just having a killer signal (even at 25,000 watts) ... there are many callers from Sandy Eggo county -- and you'll hear ads too "serving San Diego too!" in plumbing and termite.

+--

Bob has a very long string and a cup. Of course, you should ask him about his hi-fi receiver. Very genius.
