IS YOUR SHOW BOTH ENTERTAINING AND INFORMATIVE?

« on: October 15, 2007, 03:42:18 PM »

Ed Schultz commented on Imus return to WABC  (Monday oct 15 at about 920a PACIFIC).

Said, “That will be a happy house with Phil Boyce and Don Imus.”

Continued:

“As poorly as that station is managed ,they ought to be getting a 6 share with all those big name personalities…but they’re only getting a 3 share.”

Ed’s absolutely right. Their program lineup is stagnant.  They need to bring Big Ed and some NY Radio veterans on board like Jay Diamond and Alan Colmes order to get 6 shares.

Why these PD’s don’t program for the best ratings possible remains an eternal mystery.

It's all about ideology, especially at Citadel, who doesn't carry Ed Schultz on any of their properties.

Schultz is following the perfect strategy for the underdog -- attack the stick-in-the-mud programmers at the bigger stations who won't lose the old, tired formula of conservative, conservative, conservative. Naming your enemy is an old strategy of the Florida school of talk, and also of the Jacor school. Sounds like Randy Michaels has been giving Schultzie a peek at the old playbook.  Wink

You're right. A lot of it is about ideology.

Just look at the bozos running Rush's show and his affiliates.

Didn't El Rushbo tell everyone ( Like it was supposed to be true )  something such as that "If the Vote Vets want to express their opinons on my show, they can buy time just like anyone else."

Then see how willing they were, especially at WJNO, to actually run them?

What, expect us to keep our word?

Of course, turn it into a political discussion.  There are 80-some stations in NYC.  Of course, KFI clobbers WABC in billing, so perhaps someone ought to light a fire under the sales department, but to say a city with a large percentage of people who don't speak English or care about American politics should have a talk station with a 6 share is silly.  KFI may have come close, but they have a better base for conservative talk in LA than WABC does in NY.

BTW, why would Ed Schultz be first in line for the gig?  There are several good or excellent conservatives with shows... Jay Diamond?? Phil Boyce isn't pimping an agenda, you are.

I don't speak for Citadel (I don't work for them), but, though I like Alan Colmes personally...he's never, ever accumulated much of a radio audience.

Ed? He's making some noise...maybe there's a case there, but let's see what research shows...

Jay Diamond?  Who?

Alan Colmes and Jay Diamond have been highly regarded hosts for years.

Colmes founded DAYNET with Barry Farber and Dr. Joy Browne in about 1990, with Colmes on over 200 affiliates.  Colmes has the widest variety of guests of any syndicated liberal talk radio show.

That's more than Ed Schultz or any Air America host has ever acheived but I am not knocking the syndication efforts of  Ed or Air America by making this statement.

Jay Diamond got top ratings in NYC at WABC, WOR, WEVD, and WRKO.  Diamond now subs for Colmes on FOX news radio with Alan Colmes.

The industry would be better off with hosts like Diamond and Colmes on networks like ABC and Air America.

I don't think Phil Boyce has to worry a whole lot about what Ed Schultz thinks. I like Schultz, but come on. I just hope when Imus starts on WABC, he's not put into the same conservative, reactionary mode that Sliwa and Hannity do.

It would also be a big help to Imus if he doesn't bring Bernard McGuirk along.

Jay Diamond was on for a short (thank God) time here. I think he must be the most stilted, boring clone I've ever heard. I know he's been around since Marconi, was he always this way?

True, he does have to worry about what he thinks.  However, it's what he says that matters.  You have to listen to Schultz everyday because you never know what he will say next.  Today, he called Phil Boyce, "a fat slob".  I don't care how thick skinned you are when someone calls you a "fat slob" (on-air) you get mad.

Ed Schultz just tied Bill O'Reilly in listenership--3.25 million as of the latest Talkers magazine list of the top talk radio audiences.  And this is based on numbers after many progressive talk stations flipped formats.

The one who should worry is O'Reilly.

Here being where?  Jay is one of the finest broadcasters in so many ways - great guests, ability to interact with callers who disagree in a friendly manner, and the best impersonator of talk show hosts, politicians, and accents of ANY host I know of.  Did you here his classic saturday night WRKO shows in 2005?!

Jay should be syndicated by Air America, as Gnarlodious, doc9464, and others have suggested here.  That would save the network, I guarantee. With Jay Diamond on board, they could pick up some red stations, for a change.
