I found this aircheck on a different radio forum. Thanks to RI member Radiomania for this awesome find from the good old Z-100. This aircheck features "Casey's Top 40" (formerly "American Top 40") with Casey Kasem. Here it is in 3-parts.

Thanks for the files. I couldn't get the second one to play, but I've enjoyed the other two.

Just a minor note, "American Top 40" and "Casey's Top 40" were two separate shows. When Casey Kasem left AT40 after a salary dispute with the show's syndicator, ABC Radio Networks, he was replaced by actor/former Progressive Rock DJ Shadow Stevens who continued AT40 for the next 6 years.

Casey went to Westwood One, which created CT40 as a new show. First show was the weekend of January 22, 1989.

Trivia note: Both Z100 and WAVA/Washington were among the first stations to sign up for CT40.

Thanks much for these.  I had forgotten how, well, mediocre the late 80's music was.  A bright spot in the first cut was Gloria Estefan's "Anything For You'  a friend at the time did the A&R work on that album and it's a real standout amongst the dance-dross.

The airchecks appear to have had some extra dynamics compression added. At the time, z-100's processing was mostly clipping and overmodulation, I called it the "Shannon Mush" it caused intermod gurgling on sustained bass notes and smeared highs. It reappeared with Mr Shannon when he arrived at WPLJ.

Also, don't you just love the promo for "commercial free hours all weekend" then launch into a long stopset.

Definitely a keeper, thanks again.

You're welcome! I remember listening to Z-100 back when I was 10 years old at the time when I was in my PS-154 days in Brooklyn, NY. I remember heading to school when a school bus had a radio and they got Z-100 on while they picked up so many kids where they headed to school.

That brings back some memories. There was a promo on that aircheck features the "Z Morning Zoo" with Russ & Wilson where they took over Scott Shannon after he left Z-100 to go to WPLJ the following year where he did "Mojo Radio".

The "Z Morning Zoo" with Russ Britton and Brian Wilson was one of my favorite shows tha I used to listened since I was a youngster. They first do mornings on WABC as the last morning hosts during its final year as a music station back in 1981 until it flipped to talk back in 1982.

Totally disagree. Love the music here. It starts out with the end of Will To Power's remake of "Baby I Love Your Way/Freebird" (a number one hit), and then we heard
When In Rome "The Promise"
Sa-Fire "Boy I've Been Told" (big radio hit in hispanic-friendly markets. The follow up "Thinking of You" was a national hit)
Def Leppard "Love Bites" (number one hit that years)
Karyn White "The Way You Love Me"
Gloria Estafan and the Miami Sound Machine "Anything For You" (another number one hit)
Bon Jovi "Born To Be My Baby"
Escape Club "Wild Wild West" (number one hit)
Bobby Brown "Roni" (huge record with the females. Went Top 5 if I remember correctly)
Lisa Lisa & The Cult Jam "All Cried Out" (no doubt some of you will remember the 90s version from Allure & 112)

Total flashback of listening to the same "CT-40" show on WAVA almost 20 years ago on a Sunday morning much like this one.

It's interesting to hear dead-segs on Z100 back then before the countdown started. And now the dead segs are back!!!!! History does repeat itself.
