One trend I really don't like but isn't going to go away is requiring listeners to register at station websites to enter contests. Granted back in the day there were times when you actually had to mail in registrations or pick up entry blanks at merchants but this website registration is obviously an attempt to drive up website traffic for the station so they can sell ads online. That's all well and good but what are the chances of contest entrants (who are few compared to total listenership) going to the site to register then staying there to check out the latest Cardi's ad? Minimal I'd say. I really think some sponsors are being duped when it comes to advertising online at station sites. It's one of the directions ad sales are going but radio may screw itself over time. Pop ups and ads belong on websites related to the product itself if they're to generate any interest.

What do you think the stop and get entry blank at so and so location was all about? Do you think most of the people that were stopping and getting the entry blanks were foot traffic only....

No they weren't foot traffic only but bringing the listener into a store is different from bringing them to a website. If someone goes to FYE or Cardi's or wherever to get an entry form that person will very likely browse. Even without browsing you walk past merchandise. You don't get guaranteed any exposure on a website although the name of the merchant may stay with you. But I know you'll disagree with me to kingdom come on this so let's agree to disagree. People do seek out ads on websites but they're selective. What's on most stations' websites is not selective.
