Bob, Is there any radio group in town worthy of your talent?  You seem to bash everyone.

I'm sure people like Chuck, Kevin and Matt all do very well in their respective positions.  I bet at least two of them are paid very well for their services.  Radio is a business.  That is the second half of the word: SHOW-BUSINESS.   You are a talented guy.  NO QUESTION.

I wouldn't make everyone in broadcasting mad at you for posting negative comments about every radio group and manager in town.   Never good to burn bridges.

Allow me to correct you.  I have not criticized any of my fellow air talents.  I am personal friends with Chuck Stevens, Kevin Seal, Matt Bradley and just about anybody else you can name on the air.  I do not speak for those guys nor do I make any claims to.  If you can point to a personal attack against a fellow Jock by me, then get after it.

My criticisms regard the state of radio as compared to when it was personality driven.  Not hate driven, not cue card driven and certainly not dumbass driven.  I very seriously doubt anybody is mad at me, with the exception of maybe you, for my being honest about the way I see things.  I've seen managers come and go and there is no doubt in my mind I will continue to do so.  You are correct about SHOW BUSINESS.  Radio was always a business.  But it used to require imagination and personality and "RADIO PEOPLE"!  When conglomeration began and computers took over the music, the industry began figuring out ways to do away with the talent.  Hence voicetracking.  Wow!  That makes a young talent want to be in radio.  Burn bridges?  Hell, that fire got started a long time ago by the greedy bastards who gobbled up all of the properties and then went public.  Not only do the stockholders lose as well as the listeners, but so do the people who used to be able to make a living and feed a family in the Tulsa Market.  As far as picking on GM's, there are only two in my entire career I could name, but never will, that weren't qualified for the position.  Which is really an accidental insult.  I have worked with some very intelligent people.  It's just that back in the old days if you worked for a jerk a fella could walk across the street and go to work for another station.  Now every station in town is owned by three or four people.

As far as making everyone in broadcasting mad at me, don't be so childish.  Just about every guy or gal I know who are still on the air feels the same way I do.  As far as being worthy of my talent, Journal obviously wasn't.  Your comment about my bashing every radio group and manager in town is way out of line.  That's the way rumors get started and besides that it's an untruthful, limp wristed way of trying to say I stepped on your toe.  Well, get over it!

Bob, there are few people in this market who have the "ca hones" to post something this gutsy and truthful under their own name. There are few who have the brains to back up their "gutsy" posts. Most of the time when someone gets this passionate about something on a radio board, they don't have the slightest idea what they're talking about. Bravo! You obviously know of what you speak. Only time and wisdom can bring out posts like the above. Many of us don't know how to get to the truth. But we recognize it when we hear it.

Don't blame Journalguy too much. Although he doesn't work for Journal, he is a well respected player in the Tulsa market and has a good reputation. He's a good guy. Many on this board have worked for him and like him. He's not a jerk. He just doesn't have as much time in the biz as you. You've actually been in radio longer than he or I have been alive.  He's just speaking out of his own personal world-view, which has been largely corporate. So bear that in mind.

Good to see you both sharing your opinions. I respect you both and think "journalguy" is humble and adult enough to take what you said in the right spirit.

He might want to retire the "dickeroo" nickname: Shocked

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=dickeroo

The Dickeroo monicker was created by Dick when he went to work for AM 1170 KVOO.  I think it was a clever move on his part.  As far as Dick Loftin as a talent, he was one of a handful of Jocks I personally know and have worked with who I can call the cream of the crop.  Dick had and still has the best set of chops I ever heard on the air in radio.  I still, to this day, admire his ability to cram 15 seconds of verbage into 4 seconds and make it sound natural.  Not a lot of guys out there could do it then or now.  I never could.  Kris Erik Stevens at WLS in Chicago could do that.  Dick is a wonderful talent.

I can remember listening to Dick when he was doing AM & PM Drive shows at various times in his career and I'll be damned if you can name anybody that was more adult contemporary than he was before they invented the term 'adult contemporary'.  He was one of the most enjoyable people to listen to in any day part buy I especially liked him in the mornings at KBEZ in the 80's.  What a killer performance.  If you've been around Tulsa Radio as long as I've been, then maybe you were lucky enough to hear Dick back in the 70's and 80's.  I'd stack him up against anybody.  However, Dick is like me.  You're only going to get what you pay for.  You want a six figure show?  Then cough up the money!  When the paycheck becomes an insult, do not, repeat, do not get in between me and the exit.

Kevan and Chuck are two of Tulsa's best jocks.  Absolute pros.  If you want to hear some of the personality radio Bob is talking about, check out a website called 79waky.com. It is a tribute site to two of Louisville's Top 40 stations from the 60's.  There are two stations, WAKY and WKLO, the KAKC/KELi of Louisville.  There are many early airchecks and the kind of radio that is missing today.  Another top shelf jock was the late Rick Alan West... God bless him.

Kevin Seal is one of the top 10 air men I've heard on the Tulsa air waves since the 50's.  I like him personally, and he has an off air peronality like mine.  He will knock you right on your ass with justifiable provocation.  Good dude and stand up guy.  We keep running into each other at funerals.  Ghastly.

Chuck Stevens is a another mega talent like Mel and Wavey who really should be singing in a country band.  Most beautiful voice singing or spoken you'll ever hear.  He is a genuinely nice guy who should just go to Chicago or New York.  An air sound like Chuck's belongs in Chicagoland.  Hell, Kevin came home by choice.  He's worked in the Apple and in Philly doing mornings.  Quite a character.  We should all get together for dinner before theres another funeral.

Wish you all would stay on subject and keep focused, instead of tripping in the past. Old Tulsa radio wasn't the original topic or neither was putting a link to You Tube to watch Chuck Stevens sing.  What's wrong with you.  No wonder most of you, on this forum don't work in the business anymore...you can't stay focused.!!!  Tongue

Who died and made YOU moderator? You're kinda like the guy in 11th grade who showed up at the party to tell everyone how lame it is.
