Quick update:

KVOO - Making Money
KFAQ - Making Money
KXBL - Making Money

This has been a good year for the cluster.  No format changes.  That concludes our quarterly financial update.

Despite what you hear (sometimes) in the market, if the three stations are performing, it makes zero sense to bring 1170 back to classic country. And then there is the question of what to do with KBXL, a classic country station. They would probably have to change KXBL as well. But change it to what? AC? Ugh. If they had plans to pull the plug on talk on KFAQ they would not have hired Pat Campbell--they would have plugged Elvis Polo in there (a guy who is funny as hell!) and would have made plans to throw the switch.

According to JournalGuy, the stations are doing well, and as long as that continues, there will be no changes at KFAQ.

Won't happen.

I heard Chris Medlock yesterday and I thought I was listening to a network host.  That guy is a natural....in TALK RADIO!  That's not just talent, it's brilliance.  His entire show focus was on the local and he kept it very interesting.  He was truly compelling to listen to without sounding like a local yocal.  Great delivery, great presence, great set of pipes, man this guy is one good reason to keep KFAQ a talker.  I'm surprised KRMG hasn't made a play for the man.  In fact, for the first time since they changed the calls from KVOO to KFAQ, I now wish (based on Chris Medlock alone) they had kept the heritage calls, "KVOO, The Voice of Oklahoma!". I see great things for Chris.

As far as a format flip I agree with 55, ain't gonna happen.  Big Country 99.5 is doing just what they want it to.  If they want to flip that format, Tulsa is hurting for a really terrific Jazz/Blues station.  Contrary to conventional thinking, Blues does sell and it sells big, at least in places like Memphis and Tulsa.  But Big Country sounds terrific.  KVOO FM is more or less going through a little adjustment but I certainly don't see them changing for a very long time.  Yeah, JBG Tulsa is hangin' in there.  I was sorry to see Andy go, but like the rest of us who have come and gone radio will certainly survive without us.  Grin

Journal Guy-
I've never figured out who you really are.  You are one of just a couple.  Everyone else I know, but would never tattle.  Just wouldn't be cricket.  In any event, you've made some iinteresting contributions to our market blogs and even I, THE ALL KNOWING, ALL SEEING, OMNI-PRESENT BOB O'SHEA, have learned a thing or two from you.  In some cases I have also been humbled.  Whatever it is you really do, whether it be sales or programming, keep on keepin' on brother!  I hope the last half of this year is better than the first half.

Your Bud,
Bob O'Shea

After seeing what just happened to Big Country 99.5 it wouldn't surprise me if KFAQ went to a Muzak format playing stuff from Montovanti on those old giant 24 hour reel to reel playback machines.

...& am I the only one who thinks that might find an audience (AND be one of the better formats on the air right now)?

mmmmm Montavanti...but let's mix it up for a new century and intersperse it with rap.

I know you guys are kidding with this, but if I was in a (former) Clear Channel situation with some (possibly) underperforming FM's, heck, I'd create an Easy Listening format with instrumental hits, movie themes, toss in a little Tony Bennett, Sinatra, Julie London, Jo Stafford, light jazz ("The In Crowd," by Ramsey Lewis Trio comes to mind...), put it on Maestro or something similar, break on the quarter hours with brief ID's and "coming ups," quick local newscast top and bottom of the hour in morning drive and, hey, wait a minute, I think I have a FORMAT here (but not nearly as sleepy as the old Schulke format from years ago). The last thing Tulsa needs is another form of Country or AC.

OR...  if I had a few million lying around, I'd buy Big Country 995... and even if I had to run it voice-tracked, it would be honest-to-goodness Classic Country with fewer breaks and sharp jingles (instead of the stupid produced imaging I keep hearing... sorry, I just think the "imaging" on today's radio is pretty lame and canned), but when there WERE breaks, they would be local, local, local.

But in reality, if I had a few million lying around, I wouldn't do a damn thing.

(But it is kind of fun thinking about it!)

Stan, how 'bout Rap-avanti?  If it didn't fly as a format, you could sell the name to the Green Country dealer for stretch sleds for
crack dealers.
