I just got an email from ProgressOhio.org saying WVKO would be a progressive talk station as of 6am 12/3 AND they are soliciting donations to "keep them on the air" with a special advertising fund.

The WVKO-AM station manager said the new format will be a combination of sports
and talk. So, in this case, it will be Progressive Talk and  local Sports? He could not give me
any more info because they are still leasing out WVKO-AM to a group and they weren't available
in when I checked.

I just remembered the name of one of those shows ....... the Chuck Harter Show.  He and his callers used to be way out there with their conspiracy theories.  A hoot to listen to.

Chuck Harder .......

I remember him running on little WPAY-AM 1400 down in Portsmouth, and all the conspiracy theories.

Like I said, since Air America is pinko radio, Chuck Harder and all those other talk shows were really militia radio.  He was on the Sun Broadcast Network out of Florida.

Boyphemon

Face it WTDA and WYTS formats aren't working. WYTS is getting a * share and WTDA hovers around a 1.0 to a 1.2 share. Plus the Line up for the New WVKO AM is from Jones Radio not Air America Radio. From 6AM-3PM is Bill Press, Stephanie Miller, and Ed Schultz.  All more successful than Air America Radio. Here is the Lineup:

Monday-Firday

06:00-09:00 Bill Press
09:00-12:00 Steph Miller
12:00-15:00 Ed Schultz
15:00-18:00 Randi Rhodes
18:00-20:00 Rachel Maddow
20:00-21:00 Dem Now with Amy Goodman
21:00-00:00 Lionel
00:00-06:00 Air America Overnights.

Weekends is the Air America Feed. Plus there are plans to do Local Sports and Talk as well.

Boyphemon this lineup will get ratings unlike WYTS and WTDA.

another ratings non-performer due to a pathetic signal and minimal audience interest. A previous poster did express hope that they'd pick up the Cleveland Indians as part of their sports package. As a Tribe fan I second this as the team deserves a true full-time affiliate in this city as opposed to the second class status they've been relegated to by signal impaired 1460. Neither station is listenable at night unless you live next door to the xmitter. But at least on 1580 maybe we'd hear day games. (now i will admit 1460 has one of the coolest towers you'll ever see  Grin)

The Columbus Dispatch also did a story on the format change here:

Boyphemon this lineup will get ratings unlike WYTS and WTDA.

I think this will be another flop both because of what they are putting on the air and how they package it.

I'm all about entertainment ..... as I've mentioned before, a BIG reason WYTS and WTDA get no ratings (besides the obvious) is poor packaging.  A bunch of B and C-grade talkers (with the exception of Savage) on auto-pilot, with no imaging, no jingles, no live voices even to seque you into the next segment.  In short, the station is BORING ... it's pretty much the dregs of the talk circuit on Muzak.

That will be a big problem with WVKO as the people in charge are financiers (like the Mays family at CC). so I don't expect too much zing in their presentation, if you know what I mean.

Although I'm conservative-liberatarian, I personally could care less what the politics of anybody is as long as they push the envelope, have some wit and are funny.  But the most important thing from where I sit is showmanship,  Rush is a master of showmanship and I think his is hands down the best produced radio show in the nation.

I think Jason Roberts also makes a good point about them needing a news component for them to succeed, but my take on it is that the news component is part of the presentation and creates the image that someone is there and the station isn't just pulling stuff off a bird, running it through some computer and out over the air.

That's the primary reason Fox News is so successful ....... it's entertaining and informative at the same time.  Its basically a news-talk station on TV.  Check out the graphics, the imaging, the talent .... there's a certain zing to it that keeps your attention ........ compare to CNN or WYTS ........ they are like going to some pointy-headed lecture at the university.

Bottom line is nobody cares what some radio DJ's take on politics is ...... they primarily tune in to be entertained ... and you've got to have all of your horses together to provide that package.  Not just some satellite shows you are loyal to because you agree with them politically.
