Star is slowly removing it's airshifts? They have only had 2 live airshifts for literally years...Sylvia in the middays and Don Bleu in the morning. They haven't had a live evening shift for over 10 years, and the pm drive has been tracked by various people, in and out of the market.
The way the MyFM flip has worked for Clear Channel in L.A. and Sacramento was nearly identical: in each case, the morning jock (the great Charlie Tuna at KBIG, Paul Robins at KGBY) was given one-day notice that his show was being cancelled. In each case, the morning jock was given one final show to "say goodbye." In each case, I instantly began wondering how long it will be until Clear Channel decides to do the same thing to Don Bleu and Star 101.3 FM. If CC does it here, Mike Preston and Tim Jordan should be waiting outside the door at 340 Townsend with a limo to drive Don Bleu over to the KFRC studios... Can you say "perfect fit"?

"Perfect fit." There, I said it. To satisfy us radio nostalgia junkies, they could then flip KFRC back to 99.7 and change the call letters back to KYUU.
I read an article about Don recently, though, and he indicated that he was thinking of retirement. He's been the highest paid DJ in the Bay Area for a long time now, so he's probably very comfortable, financially speaking. It's likely that the end of Star would cause him to begin his life of leisure a little sooner.

How many retired radio folks stay retired? If they jump out of broadcasting and change careers it's unlikely they come back, but when they retire from the business they usually wind up in a place like Lakeport doing mornings. It's in the blood.

So I'm still some what new to radio (5 years in)....So forgive me if this is naive, But the MY-FM's in LA, and Sac are pretty different. The My, in La seems to lean more rhythmic, while the My in Sac seems to lean more rock/alternative. (not to say that there is a flavor of each in both) The logos also seem to mirror their reflective "flavor". So my question is, why wouldn't CC brand a format like the "MOViN's" and "Jack's'" of the world? AND... If there IS going to be a variances, what would MY-San Francisco lean?

A name is a branding mechanism, nothing more. There have been a lot of stations using the brand "Magic", for instance, and they've been everything from 80s hard rock to 1940s big band music. Any given station wants a name they can use that is unique to the market so that they can get Arbitron points. It seems that people remember slogans and names better than callsigns (especially with callsigns in the market such as KZQZ, KISQ, etc., so the stations give them slogans and names to remember.

There was a "Magic 106" in LA in the 80s, which was Top 40, I believe. "Kiss-FM" is CHR/Top 40 in LA, but Old-School soul music here. The first "Quake" here in the 80s was album-rock, the more recent Quake was a talk station. Same with all the "Waves," "Stars," etc.
If you google "Kiss-FM," you'll get about 2 dozen hits from radio stations around the country - the majority are Top 40, but quite a few are not.

If you go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qepFMep0uv8Then you'll get a feel for lots of KISS, Q's. It is a short promo from JAMS. A company that produces jingles for many, many stations. Enjoy!
