...and I have this question: How can all of these Nashville area hispanic-language stations be supported by the Nashville area advertising community, even including both hispanic-owned businesses and other businesses wanting to reach hispanics? Where is the research? How can they possibly make enough money for all of them to thrive?
In my 19-plus years in this racket, it's been my experience that these owners are just looking for "A" radio station. It doesn't matter whether the station is located in Ashland City, Tennessee or Elephant Spread, Montana. These owners who want to put on this type of programming are just looking for an available transmitter stick to pay for and put their stuff on the air. Whether it's serving the community or not is beside the point and certainly not on their radar. And this has been going on longer than you or Scottwmro has been led to believe. At the same time, however, it has also been my experience with these owners that acquiring the station and keeping it viable and profitable are two different things...and some of these owners do eventually find that out after the fact, albeit the hard way. Happy Easter, everyone! And Scottwmro, have an Arbor Mist for me.  |

And this is different than what most other broadcasters are doing, HOW? We are ALL looking for an available transmitter stick to pay for and put OUR stuff on the air. Everytime I take a driving trip I try to print off a list of stations along the way and I tune in as I cruise by. Whether it's serving the community or not is beside the point and does not seem to be on their radar..... no matter WHAT the language. |

Ricky Martin in the 90's could have been the next Richie Valens if only he had the right producers. He is talented, but I think he didn't have the right backers to give him the push he needed and proper guidence to reach the masses.
Ricky is and has been for nearly 30 years a superstar in Latin America. First, he was part of the megagroup Menudo (where, upon reaching 18, you are out) and since then he has been a pop idol across most of two continents. While he has not been a consistent hit maker in English, he has been in Spanish and that is is base constituency. Only maybe a dozen artists in Latin America have reached the masses as well as Ricky in the last few decades. |

I know in the 90's we were playing hits from him and we play 2 retro 90's hits from him today. I've always like his style of reaching the teens here in the states. He has a fantastic voice. They should have used him for one of the judges on American Idol. Poor Paula, I've always been in love with her, and yes she has a Latino background, but these days, WAY too much drama in her life. She just can't pull out the his like she could in the early 90's. |
