Ron will start on August 30th with shows on Tuesday and Thursday mornings and repeats during PM drivetime. He will reflect on sports stories from the many years of his radio and tv career. Ron and the station will evaluate his show after a year of this new addition to the fabric of the station.

Ron "retired" five years ago from WMT and still lives in Cedar Rapids. He was part of the sports broadcast legends of the time (Gonder-WMT, Zabel-WHO, and Brooks--too many to list) who all three "retired" from daily duties at their then primary stations (again Bob Broooks is another story as he continues station jumping). Remember when the Univ. of Iowa consolidiated radio contracts into one (presently awarded to Learfield) it meant that these play-by-play announcers yielded to the heir apparent--Gary Dolphin. Gary and crew do a tremendous job that hopefully will get him and Ed into a Iowa broadcast hall of fame one day. His success was built by legends like Ron, Jim and Bob.

We look forward to Ron's broadcasts.

Sounds somewhat like what Tait Cummins did for years on WMT, also after he "retired."

Brooks originally was on WSUI Iowa City while a college student, his Iowa play by play actually goes back farther than Zabel's.  He was with KCRG (I think from their original sign on in 1947) until they dropped play by play, sometime in the late 70s?  Brooks then moved to KHAK where he stayed until Cumulus bought it some years ago.  Now he's with KMRY, although a few weeks ago I heard the local sports talk show on KCRG with Brooks as the guest from 3-4pm, then there he was live on KMRY at 4:30!

Ron was always very popular with WMT's audience.

He is a regular guest on the KCRG program, at least once, usually twice a week.

Ron Gonder is just a class act.  I can't think of any sportcasters I admire more.    I know a number of people who feel similarly.

I can't say much against Bob Brooks or Jim Zabel either, but to me, Gonder's the man.
