The thing is, like almost everyone I've met down here since I took a job in the Metro, I'm new here. I don't know who the players were in Atlanta in those thrilling days of yesteryear. I'm hearing every station, and every on-air voice for the first time. So reputations from bygone days don't mean squat to me.

The next DJ I hear who is so good that it's worth sitting through a few really bad songs just to hear him talk with be the first. And I'm well into my forties.

To Biz Listener, Spiff Carner has been a major player in Atlanta radio since early 1989!  He and Randy- Randy and Spiff are VERY popular in Atlanta.  They were a morning team until October of last year when Spiff was fired by Cheap Channel.

So? People in Atlanta used to wear mullets, too. And there was a time when the women wore giant shoulder pads and big hair. Once upon a time, MC Hammer was popular.

So, did this Spiff character actually hold down the #1 slot in the ratings, or was he just well liked by his fans?

Why do you call him a "Spiff Character"?  You admit that you are new to Atlanta and don`t know much about Atlanta radio!!!  Go back and look at the books!  Randy and Spiff have been SOLID for years!  They also have filled the Georgia Dome and other venues with the Oldies concerts that they have promoted!  Randy and Spiff have put in their dues in Atlanta area radio!

Now that's a good question.  How did R&S do during AM drive compared to other shows?  WFOX (to say nothing about Cool 105.7) was never a real ratings juggernaut overall...how did WFOX do historically once they moved in in the mid 80s?

IMNSHO WFOX was best when they played Top 40 before they moved into ATL (and ATL moved into WFOX).

Yes, there were many years when WFOX-FM Fox 97.1 had very high ratings and big $$$$$$$ ad rates.  Fox 97 was killed over time by being sold so many times and the playlist being shrinked smaller and smaller into the late 1990`s and early 2000`s....  Cox Radio really killed off Fox 97 after they bought it in 2000....  It took a few years, but getting rid of J.J. Jackson was the first mistake.

Why do you call him a "Spiff Character"? 

Did his mother and father name him "Spiff" at birth? Is that the name on his birth certificate?

So, you're saying that the station was really great, and Spiff was a part of it. But Spiff wasn't such a great personality, such a compelling DJ that he could maintain great ratings when the changed the playlist on him. Which simply proves what I've been saying all along -- it ain't the DJ that makes the station, it's the music.

That answers my questions better than you even realize.

And, as an aside to the performer who portrays the character "Spiff" on the radio, I mean no personal offense to you. I'm sure you're good at what you do. I assume that the hero-worship of a certain poster in here might be reaching the level of being embarrassing to you, just as it's causing workplace tension problems for your former co-worker.
