Too many Classic Hits Stations

Hey I like Classic Hits just as much as the next guy but there is certainly no shortage. From where I live in Lancaster country I can get no less than 5 classic hits stations if you include WRVV. They seem to fall into the classic hits format even though they only play rock hits and will occassionally play new music. the others,96.1, 106.7, and 98.5 not to mention 98.1 WOGL from Philly which carries to Lancaster.

I would like to see one of those stations go to a new format, obviosly it won't be the river or 98.1 due to their high ratings but 106.7 ratings seem to be mediocre and it has a fanstastic signal. I would say classic country (They  used to be current country hits) but I don't know it would fly considering that country WIOV is a sister station to 106.7 and they wouldn't want to sacficice IOV's numbers to 106.7. But I think it could work as most Classic country music fans don't like the pop nature of today's country music.

Classic hits is a relative term and should really be two separate listings:

Def 1 is basically "female-targetted classic rock, minus the album cuts/versions", a la WFKB or WODE.

Def 2 is what WSOX/WOGL are: "second generation oldies".

Pardon me, but I have to ask... do you really think we need yet another country station in Central PA?  No, I mean - really.

I think we have a couple of AM classic country stations out here, but I think an FM classic country station could do well.

Have you ever researched to see how successful classic country FM stations do in some of the major markets? I haven't taken the time to research it, but would guess that this sort of format would not do well on the FM dial. We were back to Lancaster Co. from Pittsburgh over the weekend, and for the most part I heard country, soft rock, top 40 and classic rock. The exceptions were The X (WQXA) and 92.7 Jazz (oh where, oh where are you Starview). WSOX and The River seemed almost identical in their playlists. I think what Central PA really needs is a true Alternative station to go up against The X. I tried picking up the new Alternative station from Baltimore without any success and was barely able to pull in 98 Rock from Lancaster either.

You mean like the country station they already have in their cluster, WCAT on 102.3? For the most part their mainstream, but they do sprinkle classic cuts in throughout the day. They used to occupy the 106.7 frequency as CAT Country a few years ago. Due to a poor signal they now seem to just target Cumberland county.

Didn't mean anything against the jazz on 92.7. I grew up on Starview 92, thats why I said it. Since I live in Pittsburgh, it doesn't matter to me that its a jazz station. Sorry if you took it that I was cutting down 92.7 as a jazz station, in fact we had it on for about 30 minutes on our way into Lancaster.

Ummmm, not to knock the market, but I wouldn't call any market up there a "major market". Sorry, just the way "that certain company" sees it. That being said, I do feel that a strict classic country would provide a welcome change and do quite well. It's called knowing your audience and programming to it.

That being said, it seems WIOV might be the only one in the area that can claim more than one market (that being Lancaster and Reading). Would that be a correct assumption? Bob is more targetted for H'burg, while WGTY serves York from Gettysburg (even with that monster signal).

With all that, it would be hard to determine where to place a full market Classic Country,
