New Meteorologist at NBC30
« on: October 11, 2008, 04:07:25 PM »

I was surprised to see a familiar face this morning.  Darren Sweeney was doing the weather on NBC30 Today at 6 a.m.

He was the former weekend meteorologist at WFSB-3 doing mornings, evenings, and nights.  From what I read in the Courant, his contract wasn't renewed by WFSB this summer.  I think this has to do with Melissa Cole coming back from maternity leave.  In addition to her, they already have Bruce DePrest, Mark Dixon, and Scott Haney.  There wasn't any sense in keeping Sweeney, being a temp, even though he was one of their better meteorologists!

But I'm glad to see him still in this market.  He has the disposition, seriousness, and true professional meteorologist-like qualities to work for someone like Chief Meteorologist Brad Field.  He's not a clown at all, like so many other forecasters in this market, so it's good that he's staying in Connecticut.  We need more meteorologists who like to talk about and/or explain the science behind the weather and not just tell jokes or spit out silly little punch lines.

Hopefully he's not just a temp at NBC30.  There's Chief Meteorologist Brad Field, Bob Maxon, and Ryan Hanrahan.  John Caroll from FOX61 was working there for a while.  Then at the end of this summer he was gone, and there was a young fellow named Jeremy Schmidt doing weekends.  Now I haven't seen him around for a while.  Unlike the others, I'm hoping they keep Sweeney permanently.

I know GE/NBC is having some financial and ratings issues.  Anyone know what the status of staffing is at NBC30?

Thanks for that.  I saw Jeremy Schmidt doing the weather last week, after Darren Sweeney's arrival.  That makes 5 meteorologists on board.  I'm surprised they're running a full crew.
