What will the next SJ station be to bite the dust?
« on: December 26, 2008, 10:53:05 PM »

With WLVE flipping by surprise what stations will be next? KKSF, KTWV, KYOT or any others that people can guess on?

Will the entire SJ format disapear from FM radio in the next year? Lets hope not!

I think KKSF is next and then either KYOT (Phoenix) or KOAS (Vegas), since their ratings have been dropping.  Of course they'll move the format in its watered down current state to HD2 to "appease" us smooth jazz listeners.  Gotta love corporate owned radio  Grin

If it's BA affiliated, who cares if they bite the friggin' dust??? Tongue

They ruined the format anyway (it's not smooth jazz but smooth AC) starting some 10 years ago.  As the format's biggest fan Cheesy I am praying for their demise ASAP because their junky product won't be missed.  Jones was the last outpost for creativity in the format, and now that they're gone there's nothing good left for it in its current sad state. Sad

And I'm happy to report ALL terrestrial radio seems to be in trouble, which can only be construed as positive! Shocked

My bet's on WDSJ wasting away in Dayton.  Possibly WNUA if the PPMs are really that bad.  KKSF and KYOT are basically the same as the aforementioned, so any BA Network SJ station is game at this point.  The format really had a chance but no one's crying over the demise.  Plus not many jobs will be lost since there's no one to cut.  Most of these stations are all network.  Didn't see this coming.  I thought the game was to cut people.  Since CC SJ stations have no left people to cut I thought maybe the stations would just hang on.  Guess BA thought that too.

i want to see one of those carol archer puff pieces with a quote or two from kepler now after the way the year 2008 was for the smooth jazz format.  remember how the smooth jazz network was supposed to save the format?  well, in my estimation, all it has done is quickened its demise.  stations everywhere blew out staffs for network dayparts, with kepler promising big results for stations with a very low operating cost.  well, when the higher-ups of these stations realized the listeners were too savvy for the absolute mickey-mouse programming that is the smooth jazz network, they've eliminated the stations altogether.  what a disaster.

in the long run as many people have mentioned, the demise of BA is probably a good thing for the format, but still, even four years ago, while it certainly wasn't perfect, at least the format was in a lot of markets and maybe half of the playlists of the stations were salvageable.  it certainly was not a laughingstock.  now, the remaining stations that are even running the format are an absolute joke.  just look at KTWV's playlist on yes.com.  some of the songs they play right now were unimaginable on SJ radio a few years ago.  i really feel like this whole situation could have been avoided but when you place the hands of the format with one dubious group of people and just them alone i guess it shouldn't really be a surprise.

This is almost a dead issue now because these "Smooth Jazz" stations have already changed formats in everything but name. They are Lite A/C - B-EZ hybrids, not Smooth Jazz or NAC. So why should a listener who wants to hear contemporary instrumental music even bother. Ya know..it's like that old "McDonalds" analogy - that when people come to McDonalds they expect hamburgers so don't serve them tacos.
When listeners come to smooth jazz they want quality instrumentals so don't serve them 4 pop vocals and 2 mediocre covers between every original instrumental song. A few strong songs did actually make the cut this year and break the top 10 on the corporate chart but how much Kool and the Gang, Eurythmics, and Fergie did you have to sit thru to hear one of them.

In the case of Love 94 they simply realized that the market was young and hip so if they were going to be an A/C they needed to be Rhythmic-Dance A/C, not Smooth A/C.

Dark horse. Not next but eventually. WLOQ to vocal driven Lite A/C, like a hipper version of the Dove. Easy listening vocals and an occasional instrumental but with the vocals the smooth jazz format currently plays instead of Bread,  Air Supply and Neil Diamond.

The next Smooth Jazz station to disappear will be WSJT in Tampa, FL.  That’s not a prediction, that’s a fact.

Within time, there will only be 3 SJ stations standing:  WNWV (Cleveland, OH), WLOQ (Orlando, FL), and KMYT (Temecula/Riverside, CA.)
