WKRP, Dallas, GA from 1977-81. Did on air and engineering at WRFG 1979-80. During college GM for WGHR Southern Tech. While there we put the FM on the air with a whopping 16.5 watts ERP w/70' HAAT.Occupation:Movie Theatre Owner

Who would want 102.5?
Could a new station be made by taking either it or 102.3 dark and upping the power on the other?
Or, Davis could trimulcast La Raza on it...
WQTU 102.3 up in Rome stands in the way of either station upgrading. I am sure that the students at Southern Polytechnic State University would love to have 102.5 back for WGHR. (WGHR with it's class D license was forced off of 102.5 when the current class A station came online. WGHR went to 100.7...which was forced off when 100.5 came in from Anniston in 2000. They tried to move to 101.1...but the license was cancelled in the meantime, and no one wanted a lengthy legal battle). Given the current status with the state, someone would have to donate funds for a purchase or Radio One would have to donate the facility. The market is bad for selling radio stations now, so more than likely we would see a religious outfit take over if there was an immediate sell (the station can't be worth that much due to the smaller signal). Davis could take over to fill the gap that 100.1 nor 102.3 Buford does not cover. I was the GM at WGHR when we signed it on in 1981. Tower on top of the admin with HAAT a whopping 62' at 16 watts ERP. A four bay antenna hanging off of the tower. Somebody before me made a mistake when they purchased the audio processor and got one that was not designed for FM. It was for AM and that made sense at the time since the station operated at a carrier current station on campus. Lucky for us, an alumnus was the chief engineer at WYNX AM 1550 (and some other stations) and he swapped processors with us. Please do not tell the State of Geogia as they take inventory very seriously. :-) Over the years, the school just lost interest in the station. While I was there we had 50 student volunteers running the station. That number dropped dramatically by the mid-1980s and after.

Don't they also own a CHR in Louisville? One could argue since that station was already successful, they choose to leave it as is. But has Radio One actually signed on non-black-targeted stations besides smooth jazz?

I know the answer! They're going to simulcast Hot 97.5. I saw the new bumper stickers over 10 years ago so it must be true. It just took them a little time to put it together. Correction: Hot is on 107.9. What is on 97.5 is Praise. However, the folks at Radio-One Atlanta could simulcast either one. If I were to make a prediction on what station they would simulcast it would be Praise 97.5 because the general inner northwest greater Atlanta that includes Woodstock, Holly Springs, Canton, Lebanon, Emerson, and Cartersville cannot receive Praise 97.5. However, that area can receive the 107.5 frequency. If anybody in that area can receive Praise 97.5 (which I live in Woodstock) the signal would come in weak. I'm thankful Atlanta has an Urban Gospel station on FM. I'm 20 years old and currently don't have a driver's license, but if Radio-One Atlanta decides to simulcast Praise 97.5 on 107.5. All I have to say is let them because my mother who also listens to gospel music (she's more of a white CCM fan vs. urban gospel) and takes me to where I need to go most of the time, she'll listen as long as the station isn't weak or scratchy. In other words, 107.5 is the perfect frequency. I'm aware it sounds as though I'm repeating myself. I would like to close with the fact that last year, Praise 97.5 won the award for 2008 R&R Gospel Station of the Year. Enough said.

Ironically, Perry flipped it to Smooth Jazz.

Excellent move by Radio One! Radio One had Urban AC on 107.5 years ago as "Magic 107.5." The original plan some ten years ago was to put HOT 107.9 on 107.5 when they were 97.5. They did have t-shirts and bumper stickers displaying HOT 97.5/107.5, but they ended up on 107.9. Im sure Radio One would want to sell 102.5 since the company is in a financial crunch, but who's buying stations these days and times? Radio One operates Urban Talk formats in some markets and I think thats what 102.5 should become. 102.5 currentrly has some great in house jocks including SiMan, Magic Man and now Carol Blackman. Steve Harvey in the mornings and Michael Baisden in the afternoons are strong Urban AC syndicated shows that are great too on 102.5. The new 107.5 station would give Kiss 104.1 and V103 some great competition with R&B music, but without the talk shows in the middays. Wonder what the name would be?

You didn't get the joke. When Hot was on 97.5 as a C3 broadcasting from south west Atlanta Radio-One was preparing to sign on a new C2 station on 107.5 in north east Atlanta. They jumped the gun and printed up bumper stickers and advertised that Hot would be simulcasting on both frequencies. On top of that, they distributed the stickers around town BEFORE 107.5 signed on the air. Bumper stickers that said "HOT 97.5/107.5" were all over Atlanta in the late 90's even though 107.5 was never a simulcast of the hip-hop station. I know the answer! They're going to simulcast Hot 97.5. I saw the new bumper stickers over 10 years ago so it must be true. It just took them a little time to put it together. Correction: Hot is on 107.9. WJZZ has a CP to move to a new tower in Norcross, off of Buford Highway and south of JCB. WJZZ also goes up to 50k in the process. This also enables South 107 (WTSH) to go up to 100k on their existing stick, improving their intown coverage.

And the WAMJ calls moved to 102.5 from the old Magic 107.5. I like 102.5's music and would welcome a move to 107.5, since the 102.5 signal is blocked by 102.3 in Gwinnett. Those looking for jazz can try 91.9, 89.1 and soon 102.9. 102.5 has a better signal than most give it credit for. When WLKQ is off the air, 102.5 WAMJ has a good signal in Gwinnett. If only WLKQ was at 102.1, instead of 102.3. I'm sure there are buyers. I'm waiting for the sale of 101.9 in Cleveland. Does anyone have an update? Last time I checked, two or three days ago, WAZX-FM was still silent.

What's the deal with 102.9? It appears to have the same coverage as 91.9. Is there a hole is 91.9's coverage like WUGA has in Athens? Do you think they might start up an HD2 channel to simulcast on 102.9? Maybe GPB or Blues?

When the application for the 97.9 translator was originally approved it was listed to be for WCLK but it was sold then traded to Cumulus. Has WCLK actually announced that they will keep and use the 102.9 translator. It is owned by Radio Assist Ministry just like 97.9 used to be. It supposedly has a license that basically covers Stone Mt. now with a CP to actually serve Decatur-Atlanta. Radio Assist usually sells its translators but does run a satellite Christian service that airs on several of their translators.
