The resurgence [sic] of WHPT shows what strong local personalities can do.

In this case, they're strong enough to resonate through the voicetracked MP3's on which they're recorded...

1010 did jump over 620.  Too bad it was fraud.  Turns out a member of the Sports Chix staff allegedly told Arbitron that he/she did not work in radio and lived in a nine person househould.  All nine diaries listened to 1010 and every minute of the chicks.  The numbers will be invalidated.

I thought something was fishy when J.P. Peterson claimed he was beating the competition meaning Deumig.

Wow. The Sport Chix told Arbitron she lived in a household with 8 people and they all listened to Sportsradio 1010?  And all 8 listened to the Chix for 3 hours straight? Didn't any of the 8 have a job during the day?

Unbelievable!!!

Back in the day...when ethics were at least partially adhered to....that would be both a firing and a blacklisting....

Somehow, somebody will probably be promoted over it, lol.

This whole episode also speaks volumes of the flaws with Arbriton, no wonder some radio chains are looking elsewhere.

Arbriton's sample must be very small, if nine extra people could make that much difference in the ratings.

In Sports Talk Radio where TSL drives the numbers far more than cume,  nine books can make a monstrous difference.   It will be interesting to see how this plays out since the Chix are a brokered show and the cheater in question is not technically a CBS employee.  Had that person been a CBS employee,  the station would likely be sanctioned by Arbitron and the dismissal of the staff member in question a certainty.  Since the offending party is essentially and advertiser,  the fallout is murkier.

Regardless,  for anyone at 1010 to be crowing about their ratings is ludicrous.   Even if the number in question was not obtained by fraudulent means,  the one trend explosion is pretty much proof that the numbers were accidental and not due to any real upswing in listeners.

I had a friend at a CHR station in another state, about 10 years ago.  Through some weird situations, they knew about five people with ARB diaries for the spring book.  One guy's neighbor, another DJ's mother-in-law's friend, etc.  Every one of them cooked the diaries in the favor of the CHR station, but they didn't do anything like the Sports Chixs, they were smarter and filled out the diaries with a few other stations and not continuous listening.  Hey, five books could make a difference, right?  Wrong.  The book came out and the station had it's worst ratings in years!  All of the guys at the station who knew of the fraud just about died.  They couldn't believe it.  They never got caught, which was a bit of a surprise since so many people knew.  We all thought it was pretty damn funny.
