I like it!! (KFNC)
« on: May 31, 2005, 07:46:08 PM »

I didn't remember to check if it was on till like 9 or so, but what I heard, I liked.  I was all over town today, as I am everyday, and it seemed both the KFNC and KIOL signals weren't giving me any major problems.

It's definitely on my list of "flip-to" stations when Howard Stern goes to commercials.  It became my number 2 flip-to station during Jim Rome, and it won the race for my TSL after 2pm, beating out KILT-AM and KBME.

One thing that was weird, was as I was listening to the morning show...whoever the guy was with Martha Martinez, I was kinda hoping I'd get a run down of what the day's programming was.  At that point I wasn't sure if there was going to be a Pruett show or not and what the whole line-up was.  I wasn't even sure what was coming up next when the morning show was signing off.

So the afternoon show is called Pruett, Shannon, and The Boner?  I thought Shannon WAS The Boner, so why does he get billed twice and Kendrick doesn't get anything when she talks as much as they do?  And who's the other guy?  I guess since I missed the very beginning of the show, I missed the introductions.  From what I gathered, it sounds like he was either a producer or sidekick of Grego's.  They've got a LOT of people working up there!  Is this the largest air staff in Houston?

The Craig Roberts song returned in it's full glory on the Pruett show!  Awesome.

I never really got into 97 Talk when it was on.  Maybe because I was younger, but it just seemed like it was...too issue oriented.  A lot of the stuff on here, while they may stay on a topic for a while, just seemed a little more free form.  Much like the Walton and Johnson show, where they are accused of getting on the radio and reading the newspaper for 4 1/2 hours...it's just people talking about "stuff."  Plus you get the real news every half hour or whatever.

I would much rather listen to this than KTRH if I wanted breaking news or to be updated.  It's more pleasing to the ear, mine at least, so we'll see if the content and timeliness can match the veteran AM stations.  Since I guess it was a slow news day, the news didn't change much.  In the noon hour I started hearing the same story within the half hour...maybe even sooner than that.  And I know it's meant for people who check in and out at that time; it just seemed like it turned over a little quick.  And the exact same stories with the exact same copy.  Maybe I'm wrong, but that's what it seemed like to me.

I thought the production and voice overs were a lot better on KFNC than KIOL.  Still seems too bare bones on 103-7 to me.  I really hope this format survives.  It's a good complement to KIOL.

I think Shannon gets billed twice due to the fact that most of John Q Public thinks the Boner is a third person in the studio.

I did enjoy their show today. It's not a reincarnation of the old S&P show, but it sounds like it will be a great afternoon show.

I did like the little dig where Shannon(as Boner) quipped that Mark Stevens carried Pruett back in the day.

Don Imus?
Dayna Steele?
Hunter & Jones?
Roger Gray?

Issue oriented? Imus was in from NYC on syndication. He talked about anything he wanted. Sometimes issues, sometimes not. Dayne Steele was an entertainment show (I produced it) Roger "Down The Middle" Gray sometimes issues, sometimes not. (On many occasions I produced his show)

Ben Hunter & David Jones had an issue oriented thing. Ben, Republican vs David, Democrat. It was a fun show, though. They actually had a lot of laughs.

Perhaps it was because you were younger. Lack of signal and lack of money eventually brought KKTL to its demise.

I have to agree.  I'm not a talk radio person.  To me, talk radio gets annoying...talk about an issue until its beaten to a pulp.  And its one sided.  but I digress...

AW and Martha - I could tell they worked together before.  She sounded smooth.  He sounded like he landed from Chicago on Sunday.  To me, AW doesn't have a radio voice, its like he's slurring or something.

I caught some of the midday talk - didn't know who they were.  I was in and out of the car driving around town during midday.

PSBK show (or formally known as the S&P show without the S-hole). (I Hope they come up with a catchier name). I caught the first 10 minutes.  I heard most of where they've been, who they are.  Pruett saying he got fired from QueerChannel and selling guns.
I caught Craig Roberts - pretty good banter abetween 5:30-5:45.  I liked the part about the local sports rundown and how Pruett had to buy airtime, did 30 second spots that lasted 10 minutes.  (those spots had me ROTFL)

I'm giving KFNC at least a year.  the show that will carry the staion will be PSBK.

I agree about the Pruett show.  It's the best thing on the station right now.  It was amazing to hear the callers phone in with complete reverence and euphoria.

This show was a lot better than what you get on KTRH so far.  It's like listening to old friends but will the feeling last?

You're probably right.  And I doubt I gave it a fair shake.  I didn't listen to the radio as much when I was in radio as I do now.

I remember really trying to get into Imus and wanting to like it, but it just wasn't doing it for me.  And the few times I caught Dayna, it just didn't catch my attention for whatever reason.  Same thing when KIKK was running Don & Mike.  There were bits and pieces that I did find funny or interesting, but just flipping to it during the commercials on 610, it rarely kept me there longer than the 6 minutes I allowed it till I switched back.

You really don't have to have a huge staff to do news well, just good people.  KILT regularly ran circles around KTRH with just a 3 man staff.  But as someone mentioned in another thread -- street reporters?Huh?  Just ripping and reading AP and Metro news copy isn't going to cut it in the news blocks.

Now help me out here please.  I haven't listened to KIOL at all and hadn't listened to KLOL for years before it flipped to Mega but as I understand it we now have 2 radio stations trying to recapture the glory of KLOL before it flipped and attract segments of the huge audience that KLOL had before it flipped, and they're both owned by the same company and both have signal problems.  Have I missed something?

I'm outside the city so I don't get to hear their signal... but is that what their "news" is?  rip-and-readers?  that's not going to cut it.

AP = day-old newspaper stories.
Metro = day-old AP stories.

what makes radio news great (and better than tv or paper) is the immediacy. get the info, get it right, get it on the air now.  there's energy and excitement and electricity in radio... and that doesn't mean rip-and-read.

what happened to enterprise?  complacency sucks.

I love this news channel. I'm under 30, but being a geek (by trade and hobby) I've always found myself tuning in KTRH until they stopped having news and their talk personalities sucked. Chris Baker was funny, _sometimes_. KFNC however, is EXACTLY what I was looking for, its fresh, different, and they still fill you in with the things going on. I too wait to see what the coverage is like during an "event". I have to admit I changed over to just "check out" the new news channel, and I'm having trouble changing the station =]

I hope they keep it up, clean up the mis-steps a little bit, and hopefully they last.

I with you on pretty much everything you said.  Call me sentimental, but I loved the Craig Roberts song.  Pruett, in my humble, can easily re-establish himself in the Houston market if he gets the right cowboys riding with him.  We'll see if he has them.  My guess is that they'll start pulling from the sports demo and some of the old KLOL demo.
