Small Market AOR
« on: July 02, 2009, 02:47:10 PM »

Anyone know of some of these small gems that have wider playlists, play "wow" songs and maybe even stream?

Lately, I've been checking out WXJK in Farmerville,VA - anything from deeper Floyd and Doors to Hole and Tragically Hip.

Z103.3 - "The Heart of Rock" in Fergus Falls, MN also has a broad playlist mixing classic rock, new wave, modern rock and AAA. Doesn't stream, but website:

KZLE in Batesville, AR now all classic rock used to be AOR as "The Max" and did a great job with the playlist.

Any rock radio gems out there, worth a stream or a roadtrip even?

KLRQ-FM in Clinton, Missouri had a much silmular version of a small market AOR many years back, now it's a K-Love station (christian contemporary).

Alt rock stations nationwide have had horrible ratings for years! AOR is better but only in the mid-markets cause they can play more of a harder rock playlist. Peeps are tired of PDs playing recognizable Alternative songs/bands each and every day in the bigger markets.

I think the midmarkets have it down right.... play more New Rock... and with a harder side and only play the top alternative rock bands (aka Greenday, Linkon Park) cause they are very popular and will bring in listeners from that area.  Otherwise, Disturbed,Shinedown,Metallica,Slipnot,Mudvayne,5FingerDeathPunch and even 80sRockers Chickenfoot,Queensryche,Tesla and Bulletboys are hitting the top 40 AOR charts..  yeah I did say BulletBoys.. their song debut this week "Road To Nowhere" sounds like Creed very much so...and should get alot of national airplay unless its not promoted.

KHTQ,WJJO,WRIF,WIIL,KZRR, are just a few of the mid-markets with highest ratings beating out even Adult AC in 18+ age groups... why? Cause they play 7/12 songs per hour that is current..1 recurrent and 3-4 only that is yesterdays hardrock!
