FM in Cuba...... status?
« on: July 05, 2009, 01:06:25 AM »

I'm curious of the current state of FM broadcasting in Cuba.  How many FM stations are there on the island and how many are running Stereo and RDS?  I know that broadcasting in Cuba is completely controlled by the government.  But I'm curious if there are stations that play Rock, in addition to the usual classical, "Radio Reloj". "Radio Havana Cuba" et.al.  Any thoughts?

There is a small list of Cuban FM stations in the World Radio TV Handbook under the country listing. Also try http://www.fmscan.org/f

Use this URL for La Habana, Cuba: http://www.fmscan.org/findpos-qthname.php?l=-82.36&b=23.13

  • Type in La Habana, Cuba or Havana, Cuba
  Saves to your browser
  • Click OK
  • Click Generate

Enjoy!   I have no idea how up-to-date the information is in the list, and there are no call letters or RDS/RBDS information.

I tried looking on the web but no success - I recall David Eduardo wrote about FM Radio in Cuba some time ago. Don't we wish Arnie Coro was reading this board, however, I have never seen him on this board. He has/had a program on Radio Havana Cuba called "DXers Unlimited". If anyone would know it would be Arnie. http://www.radiohc.org/Distributions/arnie.html

By the way, I realized after posting that Radio Havana Cuba has another URL www.rhc.cu I couldn't get on their site this afternoon but if you can perhaps there may be a more up-to-date "DXers Unlimited" section there. I know that I have recently seen information from Arnie Coro on Glenn Hauser's www.worldofradio.com site, or you can go directly to: www.w4uvh.net/dxlatest.txt, so that means that Arnie Coro is still active. You may be able to get Arnie Coro's email address from the Radio Havana Cuba website or perhaps it's on the World of Radio website under the DX Listening Digest. Every now and then there are DX reports of FM stations from Cuba on DXLD, and you may also want to try: http://www.wtfda.org/, the website of the Worldwide TV-FM DX Association. The reality of FM Radio in Cuba is that there is no official information from the government of Cuba, and it's  understood that FM stations are relatively low-powered - not more than about 10kW ERP and, with the exception of Havana and mountainous areas of Cuba, antenna height is relatively low - compared to US, Canadian or Mexican FM stations. ...for E-skip or Tropo you won't need a lot of power on their end to hear them if the conditions are right!

Was able to locate an email address if anyone would like to contact Arnie Coro arnie@rhc.cu for information regarding FM broadcasting in Cuba.

On the newer Radio Habana Cuba website, www.rhc.cu, DXers Unlimited can be found here: http://www.rhc.cu/viejo/ingles/dxers/dxersmenu2008.htm
Perhaps someone could ask Arnie why DXers Unlimited has no transcripts for 2009 yet, though there are transcripts for his programs in 2007 and 2008.

Is it illegal in Cuba to pick up and/or listen to foreign / american radio waves?  I read an article that one person tried to pick up Univision 23 WLTV from Miami, but he got caught and fined for watching foreign media.
