Why hasn`t Ernie Johnson Sr. had something named after him at Turner Field???
« on: August 25, 2009, 07:23:11 PM »

Ernie Sr. started the Atlanta Braves radio Network back in 1966 when the Braves moved to Atlanta.  He was with them going back to the Boston Braves back in the late 1930`s.  The Braves in recent yeras named the T.V. Booth for Skip carey and the Radio booth for Pete Van Wieren.  What about Ernie Johnson Sr.  He was the voice of the Braves for years and years... even before they moved to Atlanta!!!  Ernie sr. is still alive and well and needs something named after him at Turner Field...

While I agree Ernie Sr. deserves some recognition for his many years with the Braves organization, let's get some facts straight. He signed with the Braves in 1942 (not the late 30's). He didn't "start" the Braves radio network. That was created by the Chicago group that owned the team, led by William Bartholomay. Johnson was indeed with the Braves broadcast team in Milwaukee but he was not the lead announcer until Milo Hamilton departed Atlanta for Pittsburgh. Initially, the Braves had Larry Munson in the booth but Munson bolted for the Bulldogs just two months into the 1966 season.

Ernie had the radio booth named after him at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium after he retired.  He's a Braves Hall of Famer.  He's more than received his recognition.

Which parking space is named for Ernie Sr. on what used to be the site of Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium?

He's a Braves Hall of Famer.

Ernie, Pete, and Skip were inducted into the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame last year. Heard they'll both be at this years event in October. Al Ciraldo is being inducted. Great to see the sports guys get their due.
