Looking for info on 87.9 FM station near Cosby TN. We saw a small sign on road and tuned them in for about 20 miles. Eclectic mix of gospel and old country including Dolly Parton. Announcer never gave call letters, but sounded like Saigon Mary (or whomever Robin Williams was up against on the radio in 'Good Morning Vietnam'). Do they have a website? Thanks, candlercraig@yahoo.com

I'm pretty sure it's a pirate station out of Cosby. Found this link on the web: http://w50scountry.tripod.com. Interesting site to say the least. No references on the FCC website or any other to a licensed signal there. I know when I was up there in a cabin a couple of years ago, they broadcast on 90.7. I think then they moved to 90.1 when the full power station began at 90.7 out of Newport earlier this year. Guess since WATE-TV's audio is no longer on 87.7, they thought their signal would be cleaner on 87.9. A little off topic, but I would guess now the FCC could start licensing stations at at 87.7 and 87.9 since analog TV channel 6 no longer broadcasts on or near 87.7. Surely, they've already thought of this so they could make another few $$

Oh yeah.. it's a pirate station..
Anytime you find a radio station website that says something like:
1. The American Flag has been misrepresented (what the hell is that about?)
2. History of the Statue of Liberty (any more Freedom Fighters out there?)
3. The world is changing..we must keep informed of these important situations so that when the time comes to act, we will know what to do (ready... set... GO get your gun permits).
4. "We broadcast the truth." (OMG..draw your own conclusion about this one).
5. "With out the big machine regulations" (obviously, the "big machine" here is the Federal Communications Commission)
6. Notice all the misspellings on the website: "effect" instead of "affect"....."with out" instead of "without"...."email us just click" instead of "email us, just click".... Frankly, I'm surprised the word "receive" didn't trip 'em up..that one always gets folks who know how to put words together.. they just can't spell them.
The best thing we can do, is band together.. contact the FCC's Regulatory Bureau, and report these uprisers who have decided Cocke County is an independent country and THEY don't have to follow the rules and regulations every other American station has to. I have already ratted on them, as of 15 minutes ago.
Oh yeah.. it is a pirate station.

So what if it is a pirate? Do you have a personal interest in this frequency?
What does anyone have to gain by sticking their nose in someone's business and ratting on these guys? Especially if it does not affect you directly?

I agree with Raingus. Unless your own personal station is being affected by a pirate, why notify the FCC? Even if these folks are a bit redneck and pirate, why should you care? FCC 'cops' are just like the hwy. patrol in Virginia and southern Georgia who pull folks over for "speeding" when they are doing 71 in a 65. Just ridiculous.

You forgot about the Tennessee Hiway Patrol, they're becoming a batch of thugs everyday. I think I saw on the news maybe Bristol or Knoxville another "supervisor " resigned. I do know a former Washington Co.(TN) sheriff who was appointed Director of Public Safety later resigned because of inappropriate business practices. duh? And we trust our goverment?

Do these guys have more than one transmitter on 87.9? I'm hearing traces of the signal all over Knoxville. I heard a fairly strong trace near Pellissippi Parkway and Hardin Valley. Also heard it near Pellissippi and Alcoa Highway. I know it's them because I heard the ID for "W50s Country" at both locations. That is amazing for a pirate signal to make it that far from Cosby.

The rest of the radio world has to buy signals, maintain licenses, pay fees, and abide by the rules. If you don't you[EDIT*]should be busted. End of story

A pirate station is no worse than a licensed station that goes over its allotted power and interferes with other stations.

[EDIT*=reference to inflammatory content]Unfortunately the FCC has made it almost impossible for the smaller guy to own a station, no thanks to Corporate Radio. BTW, it's still none of your and anyone else's business if someone has a pirate up and running unless YOU are directly affected. People who are not directly affected by a Pirate Station just need to learn to mind their own business............. End of story.
