WEEF AM 1430 has recently developed a bad habit of splattering on 1220 and 1640 at night when they switch to low power. The problem goes away in the daytime when the station operates at full power. If the person responsible for this facility would look into this, or if anyone who knows that person would tell them to check on this, it would be appreciated.

Good Heavens, that's a wide Splat!  210 khz, huh?  Nasty oscillation?  Constant or varying with modulation?

It's modulation products only; very distorted. Mainly centered on those two frequencies, but does spread into the adjacent channels (e.g. 1630, 1650) a bit. There is no discernible carrier-- the noise is only present on modulation peaks and is correlated to the audio on 1430.

During the daytime: nothing; clean as a whistle. It must be related to the way they reduce power for night time operation.

Audioguy....how far away from the WEEF antenna's are you when you hear this splatter?

The noise can be heard at a distance of about 3-4 miles from the transmitter site.

One other caveat, the noise could be a function of the program content; i.e. if something in the audio chain is being overdriven by the board op. The most recent time that I observed the noise was last night.

The noise has returned as of 6:25 pm local time tonight. I'm not sure exactly when it started back up; I have been away from the radio off and on. But it's there now.

Update: today I happened to drive within 1 mile of the transmitter site in the daytime, and there was no problem.

The problem only occurs when they are on low power.
