Handel Announcement

Handel Makes Big Announcement! Hangs Up High Noon, Welcome Bill Carroll!

On Feb 22, KFI AM 640 welcomes Bill Carroll to the 12-2PM, Mon-Fri time slot. Bill Handel, who currently hosts that slot, will go back to putting all of his focus on his top-rated morning show.

“I definitely underestimated how much having a second show would eat up my day. That’s why I’m leaving the noon show behind…that, and the fact that no one wants to hear that much from me, not even my wife!” Handel explains.

As a top rated host on News Talk 1010 in Toronto (Canada’s most listened to news talk radio station), Bill Carroll’s opinions are often sought by local and national media. His intense but relaxed demeanor and keen insights have garnered him fans from all walks of life.

"During a time when many stations are cutting back, it's nice to be able to invest in the product. Our line-up has never been stronger. With the exception of Rush and George Noory who are both consistently rated #1 or #2 (P12+) in the market, we'll be taking listeners from breakfast to bed, live and local, with Bill Handel, Bill Carroll, John & Ken and Tim Conway Jr," says Program Director Robin Bertolucci.

There was a thread started when Handel started his noontime show, and I replied, correctly, that Handel's attendance record was so horrible, how could he possibly do a noon time show? And I was right. The first couple of weeks he took several days off. He averages 30-40 days a year, and that's just away from his morning show.
But the old guard around here, Eduardo for example, just love him for some reason. One thing abut Handel, he is a successful morning drive liberal talk show host

It was only a temporary arrangement, whether Bill originally knew it or not. Putting up compelling radio for over 30 hours a week is simply too dificult a task, even for a driven guy like Bill. And he made the right choice as to which gig to leave behind - the afternoon show was not nearly as compelling as the mornimg show.

I have never heard of the replacement guy. Is the talk talent pool so depleted that we have to go outside the country to fill a 2 hour mid-day slot? Plus, what will a Canadian talker know about LA, since he is going to be live and local?

I have heard Bill Carroll and what a smart hire. He does a great, broad topic show. He's a total radio pro. Big ratings in a 4M person market. The guy is really good and will fit in nicely at KFI. Robin was smart.

So the new guy will be live and local, and not another
syndication start-up attempt?

If true, then why not run him noon-3?  John & Ken are
probably also overextended with that fifth hour.

John and Ken's fourth and fifth hours are recycled from hours 1-3.  It is not much more effort for them

I think handel is a good broadcaster(look at the competion!) but i didnt listen because of the cheap shots he took at dr. laura. now mind you, i am not a big fan of dr. laura but the fuss handel made about her anouncement when she left kfi was classless. these are standard boilerplate deals that everyone takes with a grain of salt. the fact is yes her numbers were down and it was time for her to move on, but handel was simply trying to create some press and controversy to help promote and launch his new show, and annoying as he can be at times i didnt expect such a bush league move on his part

Why isn't Handel's morning show syndicated? It's good enough(IMO), the content isn't very local and he works for Clear Channel!?

The good part of his show, 5am to 6am is mostly of local interest and very much of an inside joke for fans. The second hour might be syndicatable in that it is just news but again a lot of it is local because he is a local show. The last two hours are not, IMHO, that stellar as was not his mid day show. Handel is at his best being irreverent, stupid, and offensive; quite honestly that is when he is most compelling. Handel without the crew and his non sequiturs is pretty much of a Dennis Prager clone just not as convincing though usually well researched.

Glenn Beck is the one I find who has managed to usually balance comedy with informative content. It isn't easy to feed people information and at the same time avoid making them drowsy. For this discussion I am not making a statement on his subject matter, just the manner of presentation. I've heard all of the pros and cons about his shows and I defer that judgment up to you all and your personal tastes and reserve mine at this time.
