The number of returns on all diaries on all formats is low. That's why Arbitron takes a sample of market and makes estimates. All the fake suburban (white) kids that wanna be "hard" listen to WIBT, rock Ecko and SouthPole, etc. All those who actually are hard and actually live the lifestyle (black) listen to WPEG, rock Coogie, Girbaud, Forces etc. It's two different audiences. I've been around them both. So, in the suburbs WIBT gets higher ratings, because that's what they cater to. In the innercity, WPEG is higher.

This thread has become comical as has this board. I have never figured out why WRFX hasn't pushed to get NASCAR racing. The Panthersweren't a good fit at all but nothing would fit The Fox like NASCAR.

I can pick up WTQR and WBRF, though a lot of people in the market can't. Certainly WBRF doesn't reach people close to WPEG's tower.

I've noticed WTQR sometimes hands off races to WSJS (which is hard to hear anywhere close to WFNZ, especially at night), which is surprising considering they're no longer co-owned. One week back when WFMX was still doing them, neither station had the race. WSJS had some other sports event and I have to wonder why WTQR didn't carry it that week.

Where I live WFNZ has no signal problems, day or night.

I can't believe why WSOC dropped the races. MRN has let a lot of their station contracts go in many of their major markets to smaller stations. In Charleston, for example, the races were on WNKT (a 100,000 watt country station with signal from Columbia to the coast) forever, but a few years ago they moved to the scratchy WJKB 950 (a classic country station that barely comes in at night in most of the area).

They have had to get a 1000 watt sports station to cover the night races with 950. Five years ago, they were on WCOS in Columbia, WGTR in Myrtle Beach, and the Gator in Savannah. Now, they are on WMFX in Columbia, the Eagle from Florence covers Myrtle Beach, and I don't think Savannah has a station.

Ummmm..... maybe the reason is NOBODY CARES ABOUT CARS GOING AROUND IN A CIRCLE! No, that IS the reason. No interest, no money. Suck it up and deal with it. Listen to WFNZ and quit whining about it. CBS is not putting it back on 103.7. Point. Blank. Period.  Cheesy  Cheesy  Cheesy  Cheesy  Cheesy  Cheesy

UR704...

You need wrap your mind around this...Last week I was told by a very reliable source that WSOC sales people had already sold NASCAR Packages that they had to go back and tell those clients that the races would be on AM. Those clients would have brought in way more money than WSOC would ever make playing country music on a Sunday afternoon...

You are more than welcome to verify that.

I was also told by another source that the program director wanted to keep the races on WSOC but was overruled by the GM who just just does not like NASCAR...

This has nothing to do with money...If they wanted to make money they would carry NASCAR. This has to do with people would rather lose money than run programming that they personally don't like. That is wrong minded thinking.

You are one of those people. You don't like NASCAR so you post these dumb replies. If we were talking about the NFL or the NBA (having to pay huge money to be on 610 because nobody else will carry them) you would more than likely sing a different tune.

Nobody cares about cars going around in a circle? Las Vegas Motor Speedway sold every ticket for this past weekend's Cup race. That is more than 150,000 people. Bobcats have a hard time selling out 17,000 tickets for the Lakers. Does that mean no body cares about tattooed street thugs making insane money to dribble a ball?

Doesn't MRN have something to say about this?  It's a brave or stupid GM who messes around with NASCAR.  Look for WSOC-FM's ratings to drop when the fans find out they are no longer the NASCAR station.

As someone else mentioned WRFX would be a good home for NASCAR.

Special event programming often gives your station exposure to people who might not ordinarily listen.

I'm sure MRN will be shopping for another FM, the signals of most of the AM stations suck here because of the bad ground conductivity.

I don't know where you get your info from, but WPEG and WBAV are both top billers in CBS cluster. The Urban audience is the largest consumers in the country. I've been behind the walls of CBS, so I know what I'm talking about. "It was a business decision, racing is one of those features that doesn't do well under the new measuring devices (PPM), while music seems to do better," says WSOC/WFNZ/WBCN PD DJ Stout. "It's a sports station, It'll allow a further connection between sports shows and broadcasts, we just added Bobcats and Tarheel broadcasts, NASCAR belongs there too," says Bill Shoening, CBS Radio Charlotte GM. In radio land, "business decision" means the money wasn't right. NASCAR is down. Last year, the Daytona 500 was down 15%. CBS Radio just dumped the simulcast of their sports talk station. It is the worst rated in the cluster. Common sense should tell you, CBS has no intention of adding sports to the FM dial anytime in the near future. You can listen to WFNZ on WPEG-FM HD-3 now anyway. Like I said before, all the little hillbillys will have to go to WFNZ.

You're right, I don't like NASCAR. I don't know who wanted NASCAR off 103, it's irrelevant anyway. If it was Bill Shoening, then he is a smart man. I do love basketball, but the problem in Charlotte is Bobcats suck. Basketball actually takes athletic ability, a real sport, like football, baseball. These are all REAL sports. Pushing on pedal does not take athletic ability.  Anybody who wants to watch a bunch of cars go around in a circle 500 times can't be very bright. Football and basketball both have huge followings, much larger than NASCAR. (ctd)

Every high school and college and major city has a basketball, football, baseball team. These are all olympic sports. NASCAR is only prevelant in select markets because the following is small. But back to the topic, the reality is this. CBS dropped NASCAR off FM and it's not coming back anytime soon. Deal with it. Trying to find the "reason" and "what you wish would happen" is pointless and nobody cares. It is what it is.  Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Grin Cheesy Grin Tongue
