Another nail in the coffin of political talk radio?

From the (San Diego) North County Times:

Did a bunch of KOGO listeners suddenly decide that they were tired of Rush Limbaugh, Dr. Laura and Roger Hedgecock? Or are the local radio ratings out of balance? Either way, there was bad news for San Diego's leading news-talk station in the summer 2005 ratings, released on Tuesday. Mysteriously, KOGO tumbled from second place in the spring to eighth place, losing a fifth of its listeners and nearly getting beaten by rival KFMB-AM.

KOGO is down 1.9 points (12+ AQH share) since the election and .9 from the spring book.

KFMB is down 1.6 points since the election and holding steady from the spring book.  It trails KOGO by .2 points.  KFMB airs local talk plus O'Reilly, Hannity, Savage, Doyle, and Snow.

Progressive talk KLSD is down .7 since the election and has been holding steady since the winter book.

San Diego historically has been one of the better markets for political talk radio.  KPLN, San Diego is one of the stations for which Infinity Radio has registered a FreeFM domain name.

One book and one market? What are the other "nails"?

I do think and have been saying for some time, there are other flavors of talk radio besides political talk radio. Just because they are not obvious and there are no huge successes to point to doesn't mean there is no potential. A lot of people who have not been around talk radio a long time, or don't know its history, don't seem to realize that political talk radio was around before Rush. It took a long time to develop.

 Exactly!!!   KLSD had a 12+ 2.6 rating at the height of the Prez Race.

 Wait til next, let's see, June, i'll guess and you'll see major ad's
and ad salesman for Radio Stations will be whistling Christmas tunes

I think we even have to begin subdividing political talk radio into separate entities. There's intelligent political talk, partisian political talk, and hate talk.

I hope America's finally getting tired of the second two. I know I am.

You're joking I hope. If not, here's how it would shake out. Intelligent Political Talk - Will be defined as political talk I agree with. Which talk stations those are will depend on which "I" we are talking about.

Partisan Political Talk - See above.

Hate Talk - The talk station that voices the opinions "I" disagree with.
